Maintenance Worker 1
The Maintenance Worker 1 position is part of the Parks and Outdoor Recreation Division and a member of the regional maintenance team that includes the Regional Maintenance Manager, Maintenance Team Supervisor, Maintenance Workers 1 & 2, and Groundskeepers. The position reports to the Maintenance Team Supervisor in an assigned geographic area and performs a wide variety of semi-skilled or manual work. This may include repairing, maintaining, and improving existing habitat areas and vegetation as well as grounds and facilities at state parks, fishing access sites, wildlife management areas, and administrative facilities. This position may be assigned to multiple geographic units or be called upon to assist with, collaborate on, or share maintenance functions of another geographic unit as circumstances require.
Employee may act as Maintenance Worker 2 in that person's absence or serve as lead crew member and regularly demonstrates independent decision-making and problem solving. Regional and site-specific variance may exist, and other duties may be assigned.
Employee must be able to work outdoors under adverse weather conditions year-round. Employee must be able to perform hard physical labor including heavy lifting, digging, and repetitive motions. Work shift is primarily daytime Monday through Friday, but some evening, weekend, and holiday work may be required. Kalispell, MT, is a city of approximately 31,500 located in the heart of the Flathead Valley in Flathead County in Northwest Montana. Kalispell residents have access to quality schools, healthcare, shopping, dining, arts, and entertainment as well as a variety of outdoor activities. Nearby attractions include Flathead Lake, Glacier National Park, and Whitefish Mountain Resort. Other cities and towns within hour drive from Kalispell include Whitefish, Columbia Falls, Bigfork, Creston, Kila, and Somers.
Essential Functions (Major Duties or Responsibilities) Duties include but not limited to the following :
Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience) : The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or equivalency and 1 year of job-related experience. Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Knowledge : Working knowledge of methods and practices of general maintenance and construction work as related to buildings, facilities and grounds, use and care of tools, and operation of a variety of heavy and light construction and farm equipment. General knowledge of carpentry, woodworking, plumbing, welding, electrical and masonry work, engine repair and maintenance, and acknowledged industry standards required. Ability to perform some combination thereof preferred. Knowledge of operations and maintenance of water and boiler systems preferred. Frequently works independently without a direct supervisor being present; able to take initiative; ability to achieve and maintain a high level of quality work performance as interpreted by the supervisor; recognize and accept authority. Ability to maintain weed control training at an appropriate level in coordination with Maintenance Worker 2, Maintenance Team Supervisor and Regional Maintenance Manager. In certain situations, awareness skills must be applied to situations where other factors may require a degree of sensitivity and restraint such as in riparian areas or historic and cultural sites (i.e. historic preservation work at Bannack town site). Must behave ethically and appropriately when serving visitors, providing accurate information about site facilities, regulations, fees, and recreational opportunities.
Skills and Abilities : Effective communication and computer skills, both verbal and written. Working knowledge of methods and practices of general maintenance and construction work as related to buildings, facilities and grounds, use and care of tools, and operation of a variety of heavy and light construction equipment. Ability to safely follow all traffic and state laws and ability to tow trailer with proper towing and safety protocols. Participates in and if qualified, provides training in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Must possess or have the ability to obtain Basic First Aid / CPR certification. Computer skills for data input on spreadsheets or other reporting programs with the ability to use tablets, computers, etc. for maintenance reporting purposes.
