Job Description and Duties
The Project Support Section (PSU) within the Mobile Source Laboratory Division (MSLD) within the California Air Resources Board (CARB) is seeking an Automotive Emission Test Specialist III (AETS III).
The unit provides efficient delivery of project support services for test vehicle preparation, logistics, and maintenance of CARB's pool vehicle fleet.
The job requires a Diesel mechanic to process vehicles and install adapters in evaporative and fuel systems for testing, check parameters and diagnose vehicle emissions, enter vehicle data into data base, perform Smog Check on fleet vehicles, maintain a car wash station, perform vehicle maintenance in a garage environment such as, replace selective catalytic reduction systems, and install fuel system adapters.
We are currently working from El Monte and will be relocating to Riverside within a month or two. Some duties listed are for certain locations only.
California Driver's License required for this position.
Duties require participation in the DMV Pull Notice Program.
Working Conditions
The positions at the CARB may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria set forth in the CalEPA telework policy and / or future program need.
Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of hybrid telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location at their own expense, as indicated on their duty statement.

- Daily use of a personal computer, office equipment, and / or telephone.
- Operates heavy motorized vehicles.
This position requires the use of Safety footwear when working onsite.
- Works at elevated heights or near fast moving machinery or traffic.
- Duties require use of hearing protection and annual hearing examinations.
- Must be able to move / transport test equipment and vehicle parts weighing up to 25 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Additional working condition(s) : Safety shoes required, will work under and around cars indoors and outdoors.
This position requires the physical ability, agility, dexterity and coordination to perform the following tasks :
A. Get under vehicles to attach exhaust connectors to tailpipes and inspect for damage
B. Move and park vehicles in close quarters in the presence of people working on other projects.
C. Move barrels of fuel weighing 330 lbs. with the aid of a manually operated barrel stacker or other device.
