SUMMARY :

Under general direction, maintains & organizes the cleaning & sanitizing of Library buildings and facilities; monitors assigned cleaning staff;

performs cleaning and routine maintenance of buildings, facilities and adjacent grounds; secures building.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

This class specification lists the major duties and requirements of the job and is not all-inclusive. Incumbent(s) may be expected to perform job-related duties other than those contained in this document and may be required to have specific job-related knowledge and skills.

Provides lead direction, assignment of duties, scheduling, training and work review of assigned staff; organizes and assigns work, sets priorities, and follows-up to ensure completion of assigned work;

trains staff in work procedures.

  • Reports the need for maintenance or repair of facilities; corrects or reports any fire or safety hazards and places barriers in public areas.
  • Closes windows, turns off lights, and locks doors to secure buildings.
  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs, and polishes floors; sweeps, vacuums and spot clean carpeted areas.
  • Dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork; dusts counters, windowsills, window blinds and similar fixtures.
  • Empties, cleans and lines waste receptacles and disposes of trash. Washes doors, windows, walls, ceilings, window blinds and furniture;

polishes metalwork; cleans lighting fixtures.

  • Cleans and disinfects restrooms; restocks restroom supplies as necessary.
  • Maintains equipment, materials and supplies in proper condition.
  • Observes safe working practices, including maintaining storage areas in a safe condition.
  • Answers questions and provides standard information to the public.
  • Monitors patrons in the Library and remind them of Library policies as required to ensure that the resources of the Library are fully accessible to all patrons.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its patrons by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
  • Keeps basic records of work performed, timesheets, etc.
  • May set up meeting rooms and rearrange furniture.
  • Follows up on service requests from management and staff on service and security issues.

QUALIFICATIONS :

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and / or ability required.

Education and Experience :

High School Diploma / GED; AND two (2) years of custodial experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.

Required Knowledge and Skills :

Required Knowledge :

  • Proper cleaning methods and the safe usage of cleaning materials, disinfectants, custodial tools and equipment.
  • Procedures for the preparation and use of cleaning materials.
  • Use and minor maintenance of hand and power tools and equipment used in custodial work.
  • Safety practices and equipment related to the work.
  • Principles and practices of employee supervision, including selection, work planning, organization, performance review and evaluation, and employee training.
  • Principles and practices of leading teams, motivating employees and managing in a team environment.
  • Record keeping practices.
  • Standard office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment.
  • Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Required Skills :

  • Training others in policies and procedures related to the work and providing for their professional development.
  • Leading effective work teams and motivating individuals to meet goals and objectives and providing customer services in the most cost effective and efficient manner.
  • Performing custodial and basic maintenance duties efficiently and effectively.
  • Safely operating, adjusting and performing preventive maintenance and minor repair to power tools and equipment related to the work.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED :

Under General Direction - Incumbents at this level have considerable latitude in the application of departmental policy, and they follow general guidelines or professional and administrative standards in accomplishing assignments.

They are responsible for planning and organizing their own workload, but ordinarily cannot change methods of their assigned work unit, established operations, or departmental policy without supervisor approval.

Supervision is minimal, indirect, and usually limited to technical oversight.

Work is performed under exposure to adverse environmental conditions, electrical currents, hazardous chemicals, biohazards, gasses and noxious odors.
