Assistant/Associate Professor of Instruction in Art Education (non-tenure track)

Description

The Department of Art and Art History at The University of Texas at Austin seeks applications for a full-time, non-tenure track Assistant or Associate Professor of Instruction in Art Education, with an anticipated start date of Fall 2024.

Rank and salary commensurate with experience.

The primary areas of focus for this position are undergraduate teaching and service, including coordination of field placements for the art education program, which interacts with the college-wide UTeach Fine Arts program as art education’s Faculty Area Coordinator.

Teaching assignments will include K-12 art teaching methods, curriculum design and instruction, classroom management, and related topics.

The position will teach three courses per semester, or the equivalent, and contribute service to the department, art education unit and beyond.

The administrative service expectations include arranging internships / observations and student teaching placements for all art education students;

communicating with students, faculty, school districts, local teachers, and other university offices; and ensuring that all required paperwork is completed and filed properly for certification purposes.

Applicants must have strong communication and organizational skills. Although Professors of Instruction are not expected to make nationally significant contributions in the area of research, we welcome applications from those who are active scholars.

About the Department and UT

The Department of Art and Art History, part of the College of Fine Arts, comprises three academic units Art History, Studio Art, and Art Education with approximately 45 tenure-line and professional track faculty, 400 undergraduate majors, and 90 graduate students.

Art Education, specifically, works with a network of over 200 elementary and secondary art teachers in the greater Austin area, as well as with organizations that sponsor arts education in the community, including UT’s new charter school.

The UT Art Education Program collaborates with many museum spaces on campus, including the Blanton Museum, the Visual Arts Center, the Harry Ransom Center, the Black Studies Gallery, and the Texas Memorial Museum.

Qualifications

Required :

  • Master’s degree, preferably in Art Education or MFA in Art; related fields will be considered.
  • K-12 teaching experience, minimum 3 years.
  • Be well-versed in contemporary pedagogical issues and practices related to K-12 school-based art teaching.
  • Demonstrated passion and dedication to student success.
  • Excellent organizational and strong communication skills, ability to work well under pressure, evidence of initiative and ability to be a flexible team player.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel locally / regionally to supervise pre-service student teachers.
  • Current or past state teacher certification / licensure in art (K-12) and working knowledge of State of Texas licensing requirements, Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, curriculum standards, and resources.

Preferred :

  • Ed.D. or Ph.D. in Art Education
  • 5 or more years K-12 teaching experience.
  • Current or past teacher certification / licensure in art (K-12) from the State of Texas. If certification / licensure is from another state, we would expect that you get State of Texas certification after appointment to this position.
  • 2 or more years of teaching experience at the university level.
  • Experience supervising and providing evidence-based, constructive feedback to pre-service student teachers.
  • Experience advising / mentoring undergraduate students, especially original undergraduate research, creative projects, and educational initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt teaching methods and content based on learner’s abilities, cultural contexts, geography, language, etc.
