The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) School of Medicine (SOM) is seeking an exceptional leader to serve as the Founding Chair, Department of Primary and Community Care.

Under the new Integrated Service Unit (ISU) model, this department is the largest ISU with approximately 60 faculty. The ISU organizational structure was launched in 2023 to unite the school’s mission with the long-term goal of becoming a larger, more efficient sustainable healthcare system.

The initiative, called Transforming Care Together, transitions into a model that has consolidated 14 departments into 7 new ISUs.

Reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine and Senior Vice President, UT Health RGV, the Chair will be responsible for building and maintaining a robust clinical practice focused on a financially sustainable clinical faculty practice in value based primary care, research programs, population health, high quality graduate medical education programs, medical student education, and a collegial interactive culture.

This leader will be expected to divide their time between administrative leadership, while maintaining clinical practice and servicing as a physician lead for UT Health RGV’s value-based payment roadmap and strategy.

Responsibilities

Define the mission and establish the strategic direction for the Department of Primary and Community Care in collaboration with the leadership of the School of Medicine and hospital / clinical affiliates.

The Department includes : Division of Women’s & Children’s ServicesDivision of Primary & Preventative CareDivision of Population Health & BiostatisticsDivision of Human Genetics

  • Develop and execute a Primary Care, Ob / Gyn, and Pediatrics value-based clinical strategy prioritizing access for patients, a strong referral foundation for UT Health RGV specialists, and innovative payment programs to ensure sustainability.
  • Establish and operationalize the primary care component of the UT Health RGV Value-based contracting / payment strategy and roadmap, partnering with other clinical / service line leaders.
  • Ensure that the necessary financial and human resources are available to support the clinical, educational and research missions of the School of Medicine
  • Assure that excellent education and advanced training is delivered to medical students, Family Medicine residents and postdoctoral fellows, as well as other learners as indicated.
  • Define and lead strategy that expands and strengthens the department’s research portfolio, provides for deliberate extramural funding investment into research activities and priorities, and supports principal investigators, clinical research teams, and other faculty.
  • Recruit, hire, develop and retain outstanding and diverse faculty. Ensure an atmosphere of support, inclusion, and equity.

Qualifications

  • Medical Degree and board certification in Family Medicine, OB / GYN, Internal Medicine, or Pediatrics.
  • Licensed, or ability to obtain licensure, to practice medicine in Texas.
  • Qualified for an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor at UTRGV is required.
  • An outstanding record of scientific achievement, grant support, scholarly accomplishments and mentoring commensurate with meeting the requirements for a faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or full Professor is highly desirable.
  • Experience with primary care service line leadership, value-based payor systems and improved revenue performance tied to value-based programs.
  • Significant leadership experience and demonstrated success as a manager at the Chair, Associate Director, Director, or program leader level gained within an academic medical center, including successful experience in the recruitment, retention, and management of researchers and clinicians is preferred.
  • Dynamic leadership, communication and interpersonal skills, and keen vision are required.
  • A demonstrated ability to think strategically with a vision of how to develop clinical services, research, and education for the future while keeping an eye on the details of the implementation;

can articulate a vision that will promote and integrate research, care, and education across UTRGV and the community.
