Requirements
Experience :
Minimum 1 year required
2 years preferred, especially in large academic / medical centers
Must have experience with complex specimens across subspecialties
Certification :
PA(ASCP) – Pathologists’ Assistant certification from ASCP
Skills :
Use of a bone saw (band or oscillating hand)
Independent gross dissection and section selection
Effective communication with pathologists
Prevent cross-contamination and maintain suite cleanliness
May assist residents with basic grossing questions (no teaching role)
Job Responsibilities
Perform gross processing of OR and clinic specimens :
Photography, sectioning, and gross description
Focus on minor excisions to complex multi-organ resections
Biopsy Tech handles most biopsies
Specimen Volume :
~325 specimens / day (~7200 / month)
10–25 cases / day (15–40 specimens), depending on complexity
Benchmark : 15–20 cases / day
Case Types :
Ortho, Neuro, ENT, Cardiothoracic, GI, Colorectal, Breast, GYN, Surgical Oncology (e.g., HIPEC)
No autopsy procurement
