Police Officer
A Police Officer for the City of Fountain ensures the safety of citizens and property by preventing, reporting, investigating, and analyzing crime within the city limits. The purpose of a Police Officer is to protect the lives, safety, health, welfare, and property of the citizens of the City of Fountain by enforcing municipal, state, and federal ordinances, statutes, and laws. Police Officers for the City of Fountain are responsible for patrolling assigned areas to deter crime, respond to emergencies, and ensure the safety of individuals and property. They investigate criminal activity, traffic accidents, and disturbances, collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses, and completing accurate reports. Officers enforce laws and ordinances through arrests, citations, and warnings, while also assisting citizens with information, emergencies, and public safety concerns. They participate in court proceedings, training sessions, community outreach, and inter-agency support operations. Additionally, officers maintain their equipment, stay current on departmental procedures, and perform other duties as assigned.
Police Officer I and Police Officer II are differentiated by years of experience.
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Police Officers for the City of Fountain work in a dynamic and often high-stress environment that includes both indoor and outdoor settings, regardless of weather conditions. They regularly patrol neighborhoods, respond to emergencies, and interact with the public, sometimes in hazardous or emotionally charged situations. The role requires physical stamina, mental alertness, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Officers may be exposed to dangerous individuals, traffic hazards, and potentially life-threatening situations. Shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, is required to ensure 24 / 7 public safety coverage.
Qualifications
Police Officer I
- Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses / training or work experience that is equivalent to completion of one year of college in law enforcement, criminal justice, or closely related field.
- Requires a valid Colorado driver's license.
- Must possess basic Colorado (or other State) Peace Officer's Standards and Training (P.O.S.T) Certificate, and CPR and First Aid Certificate.
- Minimum twenty-one (21) years of age.
- Requires good physical condition.
- Knowledge of crime prevention, investigation, and community policing principals, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and their application to police activities.
- Proficiency in use of firearms and other police equipment.
- Able to obtain the following ICS Certifications : IS100 200, 700 & 900 within 12 months of hire.
Police Officer II
Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses / training or work experience that is equivalent to completion of one year of college in law enforcement, criminal justice, or closely related field.Requires at least three (3) years of experience with a law enforcement agency such as a Municipal Sworn Officer, Patrol in a State, or Patrol / Investigations for a County Agency during the last (5) five years.Requires a valid Colorado driver's license.Must possess basic Colorado (or other state) Peace Officer's Standards and Training (P.O.S.T) Certificate, and CPR and First Aid Certificate.Minimum twenty-one (21) years of age.Requires good physical condition.Knowledge of crime prevention, investigation, and community policing principals, procedures, techniques, and equipment.Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and their application to police activities.Proficiency in the use of firearms and other police equipment.Able to obtain the following ICS Certifications : IS100 200, 700 & 900 within 12 months of hire.Salary - $37.12 per hour for Police Officer I or $41.76 per hour Police Officer II

This position will often require multi-tasking in the use of computer, phone, and office equipment while interacting with clients. Candidates for this position may be required to take and pass technology proficiency assessments prior to employment.
