Research Staff Assistant

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Position Summary

The Department of Biological Sciences is seeking a Research Staff Assistant to work in a laboratory studying the dynamic realm of mRNA processing and gene expression. The Research Staff Assistant supports ongoing experiments in molecular biology / biochemistry, studying mechanisms of gene expression and how errors in synthesis in mRNA lead to human diseases.

This role is contingent on continuous funding.

Responsibilities

• Cultures human cell types and performing tissue culture assays.
• Performs DNA, RNA, and protein isolation and, via sequencing, PCR or Western blot as appropriate.
• Treats cells with various compounds and assists researchers in analyzing cells for changes in growth and gene expression.
• Manages ordering of reagents, chemicals, and maintaining stock of laboratory necessities.
• Ensures the laboratory is up to safety standards and abides by Columbia's Environmental Health and Safety guidelines.
• Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned / requested.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required in Biology or a related field.
• Minimum (1) year of experience in a research environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• 1+ yrs of lab experience, including cell culture and protein / RNA analysis beyond college preferred.
