Paralegal

Works under the direction of AUSAs in the Financial Section (FLP).

• Under the provisions of the Federal Debt Collections Procedures Act, Mandatory Victims’ Restitution Act, and other applicable federal and state law, obtains and analyzes financial information on debtors to determine their present and future potential ability to pay.
• Initiates contact with debtors concerning payment of their obligations, their ability to pay, and written payment schedules to assure successful collection of debts.
• Conducts skiptracing activity when necessary to locate debtors, using own discretion in determining those techniques and any follow up needed to locate the debtor.
• Reviews and reconciles computerized debt collection printouts with office collection records.
• Performs all functions to collect amounts imposed as a result of the prosecution of criminal cases. Amounts imposed may include criminal fines, assessments, interest, penalties, restitution, bond forfeitures, appearance bond forfeitures, criminal forfeitures and court costs.
• Communicates with debtors to present options for debt payments, answer questions, explain pertinent procedures, clarify information and work cases to resolution.
• Prepares letters to referring agencies acknowledging receipt of claims.
• Initially analyzes claims to determine the type of indebtedness to record and maintains proper debtor and account information.
• Drafts and/or prepares letters, forms and reports necessary to initiate the collection of debts.
• Returns deficient claims explaining those deficiencies determined through the claim referral analysis.
• Enters and tracks financial data in automated systems and spreadsheets.
• May prepare tables for reporting debt and payment data in a specified format.
• Crosschecks the accuracy of payment transactions with Court records and documents.

Required Qualifications:

• Must be able to obtain and maintain MRPT facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for MRPT facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
• Requires paralegal certificate, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least one year of study. One year of legal training or legal experience or at least two years of college education may be substituted for the paralegal certificate.
• Additionally, at least one year of litigation paralegal experience or project experience (as related to the task order) is required; trial experience very helpful
• Automated litigation support experience valued. Must have basic legal knowledge, including knowledge of standard legal citation to cite check legal motions and memorandum and must have sufficient experience with legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw to perform basic legal research.
• Requires excellent written and oral communication skills, thorough knowledge and hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems.
• Role also requires basic familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources.
• Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure will be very important.

*Employees will earn H&W dollars per eligible hour (including vacation and holiday up to 40 hours/week). H&W monies are used to offset the employer’s cost of benefits the employee elects into and/or utilizes. Any remaining health and welfare monies after all applicable deductions would be cashed out to the employee on a 1 pay period lag.

Service Contract Act (SCA) Compensation & Benefits:

This is an hourly, overtime-eligible position that falls under the Service Contract Act (SCA). In accordance with the Health and Welfare provisions of the SCA, and in addition to your base hourly rate, you may be eligible to receive an additional health and welfare payment for each hour you work to ensure compliance with the minimums set forth by the act. The amount you are entitled to receive will vary depending upon the fringe benefits you select now and in the future.
