Student Housing is a self-funded, large and complex campus department consisting of 6 housing communities and 3 support units, with more than 300 staff employees, 300-400 student employees and an annual operating budget of $120 million. Student Housing provides housing for approximately 9,000 undergraduates, graduate students and their families in over 250 buildings and approximately 3.3 million sq. ft.

Currently, Student Housing houses 51% of UCI's enrolled students (in conjunction with American Campus Communities, UCI's 3rd party housing partner) with a goal of housing 60% as part of the campus Long Range Development Plan (LRDP). Student Housing also provides maintenance and repair services to student residents.

Your Role on the Team

The Associate Director of Residential Learning supervises Student Life and Development Specialists and support staff, and administers the residential programming model and residential governance, components of the Undergraduate Student Housing program. The Associate Director is responsible for providing vision and leadership in the daily operation of all residential life programs such as community engagement through the programming model, residential life policy formulation and implementation, counseling / advisement systems, educational and social programming, marketing and student staff selection, training and evaluation. Independently oversees day-to-day operations, and determines goals and performance expectations of subordinates. Makes recommendations concerning improvements of program to manager. Develops, administers, and manages assessment efforts for undergraduate residential curriculum programming model.

Under the general direction of the Director of Residential Learning and Governance, the Associate Director of Residential Learning directly supervises 3 student development coordinators and indirectly supervises up to 50 student employees. The Associate Director of Residential Living shares shares responsibility for residential living operations and participates in departmental planning, which includes developing shared priorities and advancing goals in support of student enrollment / retention, development, and inclusive excellence.

What It Takes to be Successful

Required :

  • Knowledge of University processes and procedures. Proven skill in interpreting, enforcing, and explaining University policies and regulations.
  • Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences. Demonstrated managerial skill in planning, organizing, monitoring and controlling a residential living experience.
  • Skills in active listening, critical thinking, negotiation, problem solving, reasoning, organizing, written and verbal communication; multitasking and intercultural competence. Ability to compose reports, letters, instructions, and other documents with attention to clarity, tone, composition, and mechanics.
  • Skills in project management. Ability to exercise good judgment, tact, diplomacy and professionalism. Ability to communicate and interact effectively with a broad variety of individuals in person, on the phone, and in writing.
  • Thorough knowledge of Student Affairs / Student Housing specialization.
  • Demonstrated problem solving, decision making, and implementation skills.
  • Experience and skill in selecting, training, supervising, and evaluating student and professional staff. Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise and lead. Ability to create, improve, and monitor work standards, procedures and systems that ensure effective service delivery.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of constituencies including administrators, staff, students, and vendors. Ability to work cooperatively and effectively in group / team settings.
  • Ability to work independently and to follow through on assignments with minimal supervision. Skill in taking initiative, setting priorities, and managing time to complete work in a timely manner.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently. Ability to respond with flexibility and efficiency to frequent changes in task focus, competing priorities, and multiple deadlines.
  • Skill and experience in budget management, basic accounting methods, and developing budget projections.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Must maintain CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in residence life, programming, policy review, student conduct and student services.

Preferred :

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Special Conditions :

  • Must pass background check and DMV clearance required.
  • Must be willing to assist in the event of an emergency / natural disaster.
  • Must be willing to work occasional overtime, nights and weekends.
  • This person serves as a manager on-call to provide support and assistant after-hours.

    The expected pay range for this recruitment is $65,700- $74,241 (Annual).
