Job description

Position Summary

The Director of Transmission Line Asset Management is responsible for leading the strategic planning, optimization, and lifecycle management of the organization's transmission line infrastructure assets. This role ensures system reliability, regulatory compliance, and cost‑effective asset performance while supporting long‑term organizational objectives.

This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and your assigned work headquarters in Oakland, California.

Reporting Relationship

The Director, Transmission Line Asset Management will report to the Senior Director, Transmission & Substation Asset Management.

Job Responsibilities

  • Oversee the electric transmission line system to ensure the grid is operated in a safe and reliable manner according to regulatory requirements, while minimizing costs to customers and the company. Manages the transmission grid operations including system operations & dispatch, transmission outage planning, training, emergency management and asset performance.
  • Ensures reliable and cost-effective operation of the Grid Control Center (GCC) and the Transmission Operations Center (TOC) which monitor the day‑to‑day real‑time operations of the transmission system. Partners with senior leaders at the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) to maintain system reliability and address significant, long‑term issues and strategies.
  • Develop plans and strategies for the Asset Management organization. Utilizes technology and multi‑faceted teams and resources to build and maintain an organization to monitor transmission grid health. Ensures necessary asset data is gathered, analyzed, and summarized. Develops and presents recommendations to senior leadership regarding potential changes or improvements to the transmission grid.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive asset management strategies for transmission line infrastructure including towers, conductors, insulators, and associated equipment and lead asset condition assessment programs utilizing inspection data, predictive analytics, and risk‑based methodologies.
  • Direct capital planning and budget development for transmission line maintenance, refurbishment, and replacement programs while ensuring compliance with NERC, FERC, and other regulatory requirements related to transmission asset performance and reliability and stakeholder engagement.
  • Manage cross‑functional teams including engineers, program managers, supervisors and managers, implement asset management systems and data analytics tools to optimize decision‑making, collaborate with operations, engineering, and planning departments to align asset strategies with operational needs, and report asset health metrics, performance indicators, and investment recommendations to executive leadership.
  • Provides strategic planning and direction for emergency situations and asset component readiness. Ensures and ongoing state of readiness and effective plans for emergency response for significant situations and system‑wide electrical events. Provides oversight for regular emergency preparedness / planning drills and exercises.
  • Evaluates asset failure and wire down events, using trend data analysis to improve strategic planning outcomes.
  • Participates in regulatory and industry issues to support transmission line system Asset Management. Participates in committees and interfaces with external vendors, California ISO, Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC), North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) contacts regarding industry and western U.S. transmission grid issues, developments, trends, best practices, and contract negotiations.
  • Develops and maintains an integrated NERC compliance strategy that incorporates changes in the regulatory environment. Partners with the Regulatory Relations team to effectively represent PG&E’s position and interests regarding potential regulatory developments. Oversee the management of the training and compliance functions consistent with regulatory requirements and best practices.
  • Develop department goals and ensure objectives are met. Implement efficiency and quality improvements. Monitors department performance and regularly presents status, issues, and recommendations to senior leadership including the VP and EVP levels.
  • Manages a significant department operational budget. Develops financial and staffing plans for each function of the department.

Background Qualifications

Minimum :

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent relevant work experience.
  • 10 years of transmission system operations or engineering experience.
  • Desired :

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Broad knowledge of electric utility grid operations, particularly in transmission. Understanding theories, concepts, trends, best practices, and methods.
  • Working knowledge of system operations, planning, forecasting and emergency response.
  • Thorough understanding of the electric transmission regulatory environment.
  • Knowledge of electrical theory and power systems flow.
  • Knowledge of EMS and RTSCADA applications.

  • Working knowledge of IBEW union contract and rules.
  • Strong leadership skills : ability to motivate, direct, and engage a large group of employees.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with multiple levels of internal and external contacts.

  • Compensation

    PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.

    We estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed within the reasonable compensation range of $189,000 to $294,000. The decision will be made on a case‑by‑case basis. This leadership role is also eligible for an annual Short Term Incentive Plan (STIP) award, as well as the Long Term Incentive Plan (LTIP) grant.
