The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is the oldest school for the deaf, founded in 1817 by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc. The American School for the Deaf is committed to serving deaf and hard of hearing infants, youth, and their families in development of intellect and the enhancement of quality of life utilizing specially designed instruction through an American Sign Language and English Bilingual Approach, empowering them to become educated and self-directed life-long learners.
ASD is located in West Hartford, a town recognized as one of the top ten towns for raising families. POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position : Senior Accountant (Student Billing Focus)
Department : Business Office
Supervisor : Controller
Description : Full time – 12 Months Benefits Eligible

SCOPE OF DUTIES
Under the supervision of the Controller, is responsible for all functions related to contracting, collections and maintenance of student billing, cash receipts / deposit, contributed income, accounts receivable and general ledger for the American School for the Deaf and other related duties as directed.
PRIMARY DUTIES :
- Responsible for all Tuition and Outreach & Support Services rate calculation, preparation, and dissemination both internally and externally.
- Responsible for all preparation and dissemination of all Tuition contracts.
- Work closely with the Admissions Department to prepare and post accounts receivable and tuition invoices, collecting outstanding receivables, on a timely basis and providing the necessary guidance as it relates to bad debt. In addition, to maintaining an adequate allowance for doubtful account.
- Track, calculate, and bill for all excess services monthly.
- Responsible for all daily cash receipt entry to the student billing systems.
- Maintain up to date tuition projections for use by Management in making budget and cash flow decisions.
- Serves as the primary point of contact for all student tuition inquiries. Resolves student billing account issues.
- Become the expert as it relates to Blackbaud’s Financial Edge’s accounts receivable, student billing, miscellaneous cash receipt and cash management modules.
- Assists with month-end and year-end closing process to include, but not limited to preparing monthly journal entries and account analysis.
- Provides audit and single audit assistance prepares schedules, reconciliations and footnotes as requested, respond to inquires from auditors directed by Controller and CFO.
- Reconcile student billing receivable agings to general ledger, cash accounts, and the verification of any deferred revenue. Prepares tuition receivable reports for review by the respected departments and Controller, in addition to other general ledger accounts as assigned by the Controller.
- Provides information for annual budgeting process.
- Serves as back up for other financial positions as directed by the Controller. Provides administrative support to the Business Office, including but not limited to accounts receivable coordinator.
- Responsible for monthly submission of attendance to the various LEA’s.
- Responsible for out of state Medicaid claims within various state portals.
- Prepares and posts journal entries to the general ledger. Performs tasks related to monthly closing. Prepares monthly account reconciliations work papers.
- Performs other duties and specials projects as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must possess a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting.A minimum of 3 years’ experience is required.Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office and Blackbaud Software, including Financial Edge.Experience with accounting systems preferred.Excellent communication and written skills a must.Ability or willingness to learn to communicate effectively using American Sign Language (ASL).SALARY AND BENEFITS :
