Job Description :
The Building and Grounds Irrigation Specialist performs design and work in several types of irrigation systems. The irrigation specialist will be responsible for the professional completion of work assigned with the landscaping team in the maintenance, care, and modification of Circuit of the Americas (COTA)’s Campus grounds and landscapes.
In addition, the position will include the operation of electrically powered and gasoline-powered groundskeeping equipment and machines, and the use of small hand and power tools or equipment in planting, cultivating, and trimming grounds and landscaping.
The Irrigation Specialist will also perform maintenance on groundskeeping equipment and tools and makes minor repairs (within demonstrated capability) as directed.
This is a Full-Time onsite position, Monday through Friday with weekends as needed.
Distinguishing Characteristics :
Position requires recommendation of the installation of irrigation systems across COTA’s campus where needed. Design or modify irrigation system to enhance COTA’s campus.
Install irrigation systems with leading industry components and materials for current and future growth of COTA’s campus.
Requirements :
Duties & Responsibilities :
- Must possess general knowledge of irrigation system maintenance, repairs, connection techniques.
- Must be able to communicate with team members about necessary timelines and installation process of irrigation timelines throughout the installation process to ensure meeting deadlines.
- Work directly with landscape department specialists providing landscape enhancements and new construction.
- Perform irrigation repairs, conversions, installation of pipe, fittings, control wire, timers, and associated irrigation parts.
- Perform landscape related duties when irrigation duties are subjected to different timelines on a particular job.
- Responsible for proper installation of irrigation according to industry standards as well as company policy / procedures.
- Perform pre and post landscape construction irrigation checks and provide detailed estimates for repairs and / or necessary changes to achieve the designers' plans.
- Rebuild, replace damaged valves, solenoid, flush ports, and properly repair damaged wire.
- Answer client questions regarding their irrigation system and train the customer in the use of the controller as needed.
- Design and price new or expanded irrigation and existing irrigation system repairs.
- Will be required to assist in Landscaping activities assigned by Campus General Services Leadership.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
Knowledge of
- Policies, procedures, and practices, such as, OSHA, and others.
- Safety guidelines.
- Tools, equipment, and materials common to the building and grounds environment.
Skilled In
- The ability to read English language sufficiently to understand written work orders and instructions.
- Able to follow directions for the proper mixture, use, and disposal / storage of cleaners, solvents, chemicals, fertilizers, and comparable products used in groundskeeping (landscaping)is required.
- Skilled in the proper operation and maintenance of ground maintenance tools, equipment, and machinery is required.
Ability to
- Ability to read architectural and engineered drawings, specifications, and diagrams.
- Ability to measure and perform mathematical computations.
- Ability to design, install and maintain complete lawn / landscape irrigation systems.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to operate and use a wide variety of equipment, including hand and power tools.
- Ability to work independently and with other district maintenance personnel.
- Extensive knowledge in the use of equipment, materials, methods, plantings, practices, and procedures associated with landscaping and irrigation.
- Work independently.
- Communicate effectively.
- The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
Required Qualifications :
- High School diploma.
- At least 5 years of relevant experience.
- Associate degree from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
- Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check and drug screening.
- Technical school or course credits in arboriculture, horticultural and / or floriculture is desirable.
- Valid Texas Driver’s License is preferred.
Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements :
Certified Irrigation License or Tech License preferred. (Acceptable Certifications Below)

Physical Demand & Work Environments :
- Ability to stand, sit, use of hands to handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms.
- Ability to lift and / or move up to 50 to 100 pounds.
- Ability to squat, bend, twist, push / pull, lift, kneel, crouch.
- Ability to stand / walk for long periods.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.
- Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and / or loud noises.
- The work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
- Work in extreme environments outdoors throughout the year.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be loud during events.
