Position Summary :

Mental Health Technician II (MH Tech II) is responsible for assisting and supporting patients through the entire treatment experience from admission through discharge. MH Tech II responsibilities primarily include ensuring patient safety, providing milieu interventions, leading psychoeducational groups, and supporting patients as they navigate the treatment process. As the Tech team is available to the patient on a twenty-four hour basis, careful patient monitoring and communication with the treatment team is essential. Reports to Facility Manager / Program Director.

Essential Job Functions :

  • Familiarizes self with the Philosophy, Mission, goals, and objectives of the Discovery Mood and Anxiety Programs. Complies with all Discovery policies and procedures. Attends all designated meetings.
  • Orients new patient to the treatment program, its requirements, intent, and routine. Completes needed assessments within 24 hours of admission.
  • Determines whether the new patient has any special needs, communicates those needs to the treatment team and assists the patient in fulfilling those needs.
  • Monitors all patients through the treatment experience, keeping patients in line of site in the milieu and checking on patients in bedrooms or other areas on a regular basis.
  • Supports co-workers in creating a positive environment, being a role model and working as a team.
  • Contributes to the well-being of all patients by serving as a positive role model, demonstrating professional and caring manner toward co-workers, patients, and guests. Treat all patients, guests and co-workers respectfully and courteously.
  • Facilitates treatment plan set forth by the Therapist by providing day-today support to patients and if patients need to "check-in", help patients engage in a positive coping skill. Directs patients in a clear, concise, and informative manner.
  • Understands the importance of structure by following the house rules and group schedule each shift.
  • Responsible for running and engaging patients in therapeutic groups such as coping skills, relapse prevention, psycho education, Life Skills, etc. for the expected length of time identified in the Program Schedule. Also assists in providing group ideas.
  • As MH Techs are the "eyes and ears" of the milieu, they are responsible for documenting any behaviors that occur in the milieu in a very thorough and appropriate manner. Must maintain confidential nature of all patient and program related activities.
  • Answers telephone promptly and politely. Transfers any inquiries they are unable to assist with to the Therapist, Milieu Manager or Program Director.
  • Will work during meal periods in order to help model good behaviors to patients, redirect eating disorder behaviors, and to meet regulatory and approved program standards as allowed by applicable state wage and hour laws. The meals will be provided by the employer at no charge to the employee and the time will be treated as hours worked. Staff are required to eat their meals with the patients during mealtimes.
  • Maintains a clean environment by completing the cleaning required on the shift worked and documenting the is cleaning online.
  • Makes timely request for leave and makes sure there is coverage for any scheduled shift that is missed. Understands that missing work leaves the floor with less supervision and takes responsibility of the safety of each shift.
  • Since email is the primary form of communication within Discovery, it is required to check company provided email on a regular basis. This should be each shift worked. Employee is responsible for information missed that was sent via email.
  • Complete overnight observations every 15 minutes for patient safety.
  • Is a positive role model or shift lead to colleagues.
  • Performs any other assigned and / or requested duties.
  • Direct care staff duties as assigned

Core Competencies :

  • Ability to run groups effectively AEB providing a check-in, engaging all members, and providing structure to group format.
  • Able to show effective writing and communication skills AEB documentation review, email timeliness, and verbal communication with staff and patients. Add timeliness with documentation.
  • Ability to support the milieu, following line of sight guidelines, engaging patients in program, and able to provide redirections as needed.
  • Ability to embrace and exude the Discovery Mood and Anxiety Program mission, check emails at minimum 2x a week (every shift for full time and part time employees) and have visited the DMAP SharePoint site at least once per month. METRIC : Complete all tech trainings, employee file up to date, policy system is up to date, visited the DMAP SharePoint at least 2x, and checks emails 2x a week (every shift for full time and part time employees).
  • Able to check in with patients and provide appropriate observations AEB line of sight, 1 : 1 safety observation when indicated, bathroom observations when indicated, and check in with patients that show rapport has been built.
  • Knowledge, Education, and Experience :

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university OR
  • One year experience in mental health setting or working with adolescents
  • Must attend all training, education, and staff enrichment activities
  • Must possess a current Driver's License in good standing
  • Must be CPI and CPR / First Aid certified within 90 of employment with Discovery
  • Physical Demands :

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to do the following :

  • Engages in sustained power grasping and pushing / pulling motions
  • Exposure to dust, gas, odors, liquids, or fumes
  • Intermittent lifting and carrying up to 40 pounds, transporting object usually by hand, arm, or shoulder
  • Hand / eye coordination : Performing work using both
  • Working with hands : Seizing, holding, and grasping
  • Able to lift by raising or lowering an object from one level to another
  • The ability to respond quickly to emergency situations , which may involve running or moving rapidly.
  • Frequent standing and walking for extended periods, often throughout the entire shift.
  • Potential exposure to infectious diseases, bloodborne pathogens, and hazardous materials , requiring adherence to safety and PPE protocols.
