ROLE DESCRIPTION
The Senior Director, Communications & Media works across multiple entities within the Pivotal ecosystem and is an integral member of the Communications & Public Affairs team. This role shapes and implements communications activities for the Principal’s voice, profile and messaging. It is responsible for select communications strategies and for reputation risk and crisis management across the Pivotal ecosystem. The role also shapes media strategies for the Principal and develops a broader media strategy for Pivotal storytelling. It collaborates with internal partners and a diverse set of external collaborators to magnify the Principal’s voice, brand, and awareness of Pivotal’s key issues. The position partners with the Vice President, Communications & Public Affairs to advise on communications, media relations, messaging and staffing for diverse engagements. This is a Limited-Term Employee (LTE) position with an expected duration of 3 years.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Strategic Media & Communications Leadership : implement the strategic direction to elevate the Principal’s profile, coordinating with Digital, Writing, and Creative Studio teams.
- Develop and lead comprehensive communications strategies defining the Principal’s narrative, messages, audiences, and tone.
- Design and implement proactive media strategies for the Principal’s public presence and broader Pivotal storytelling.
- Ensure effectiveness of tailored communications strategies across narrative, media relations, digital channels, and staffing.
- Lead development of media strategies that amplify Pivotal’s key issue areas.
- Craft messaging for media interviews and provide guidance to spokespeople.
- Collaborate with the writing team to shape narrative, op-eds, and speeches; prepare the Principal for engagements.
- Manage risk mitigation and crisis communications for the Principal and Pivotal’s ecosystem, applying analytics and emerging platforms.
- Serve as a trusted communications adviser to the Principal and staff the Principal’s engagements as needed.
- Coach and manage the Principal’s high-profile media engagements; serve as spokesperson when required.
- Travel domestically and internationally to support media opportunities.
- Stakeholder & Media Relations : build relationships with premier journalists; manage external relationships and contractors; oversee agency contributions to media work.
- Lead major projects as directed and align editorial calendars and media strategy with related roles.
- Oversee, train, and mentor team members; interview, hire, onboard, and develop staff; foster inclusivity and accountability.
- Manage the media team budget and collaborate on strategy to elevate the Principal’s leadership and voice.
- Represent and act as proxy for the Vice President, Communications & Public Affairs when needed.

Minimum 12 years of experience with global media relations and / or communications in public or private sectors, or equivalent.Minimum 8 years leading teams, with commitment to staff development and equity.Experience leading media-focused teams with deep knowledge of media landscape and digital platforms.Direct experience with Principals (C-suite executives, philanthropists, or political leaders) providing communications counsel and media opportunities.Experience with premier media outlets and knowledge of the global media landscape.Experience working with agency networks and contractors; strong diplomacy and negotiation skills.Understanding of campaigning, targeted outreach, and integrated campaign models (advocacy, media, partners).Excellent written and verbal communications; proficiency in Microsoft 365 and systems relevant to the role (e.g., Salesforce, Workday).Willingness and ability to travel as needed.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with international media.Experience shaping policy narratives through strategic communications.EMPLOYMENT DETAILS
This is a full-time position based in Pivotal’s Seattle, WA or Kirkland, WA office. The salary range is $266,796 - $286,311. This LTE position is expected to last 3 years. The duration does not alter at-will status.
