DUTIES & RESPOSIBILITIES

This position works 20-25 hours a week.

The incumbent is an employee of the Florida Department of Health in Clay County, represents the agency and its mission and values. The incumbent is part of a global public health organization and is expected to promote cooperation, courtesy, and teamwork, in a diverse environment. This position serves as a Family Support Worker in Women, Infants, Children (WIC) program and works under the general supervisor of the Public Health Nutrition Program Director. This position promotes breastfeeding as the normal, preferred method of infant feeding by providing basic breastfeeding information to pregnant and breastfeeding women through peer-to-peer counselor contacts. Provides support through personal interaction, information on aspects of normal breastfeeding, anticipatory guidance to reduce the occurrence of problems, and / or additional information or resources to assist mothers to, prevent, handle, and / or solve common breastfeeding concerns.

Counsels WIC pregnant and postpartum mothers through telephone contacts and in person in the WIC clinic or hospital. Accurately screens and assesses client’s breastfeeding status and needs, reviews demographic and nutrition / medical data in client’s WIC record in FL-WiSE, and document in client’s WIC record. If working from home and without access to a WIC-provided laptop computer, documents contacts on the Loving Support to Manage Peer Counseling Program Prenatal and / or Postpartum Client Contact Forms and in FL-WiSE when returned to the WIC clinic.

Works within scope of practice of providing basic breastfeeding information to WIC clients. Provides appropriate referrals to International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), local agency breastfeeding expert, WIC nutritionist, other health care professional, and / or social services agencies. Follow-up with accurate documentation according to established protocols as needed and / or required.

Receives a caseload of WIC pregnant and breastfeeding women and make routine contacts, per local agency protocols, with all mothers assigned. Provides follow-up breastfeeding services on all referrals received. Respects each client by keeping her identification and information confidential.

Assists with presenting prenatal classes and breastfeeding support groups in WIC clinics, according to local agency lesson plans and protocols.

May assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects, outreach breastfeeding events, and duties as assigned.

Accurately completes and submits all administrative records, including, but not limited to : EARs, timesheets, leave requests, travel, and monthly reports in a timely manner according to Health Department policies and deadlines.

Attends breastfeeding training classes and supervised activities to increase my skills and knowledge. Participates in WIC Program, Health Department and breastfeeding program meetings, in-service trainings, conferences, and workshops as assigned. Completes mandatory trainings timely.

Performs other related duties as assigned. Adhere to assigned work duties and work schedule as designated by supervisor.

Qualifications : Minimum –

Exclusively breastfed a baby for at least 6 months

Must be willing to travel within Clay County

Must have a minimum of high school diploma

Must be willing to be on-call at night or weekends (up to 9pm at night, and weekends 9am-9pm)

Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 25lbs over uneven ground unassisted.

Must have a valid state driver’s license

Must not have following credentials : Registered Nurse (RN), Registered Dietitian (RD), Licensed Dietitian / Nutritionist (LD / N), or International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).

Preferred –

Exclusively breastfed a baby for at least 12 months

Breastfed a baby in the past 5 years

Has been a participant on the WIC program
