Senior Counsel - Digital Assets

This role will support BMO’s strategic engagement in the evolving landscape of Digital Assets, including payment stablecoins, blockchain technologies, distributed ledger technology (DLT), cryptocurrencies, and related innovations. The successful candidate will contribute to initiatives involving legislative advocacy, regulatory developments, rulemaking processes, and external communications. We are seeking a candidate with strong legal research and analytical skills, a solid understanding of the regulatory and policy environment, and a demonstrated ability to assess and manage compliance and risk considerations in alignment with BMO’s legal and regulatory obligations.

Responsibilities

• Make recommendations to senior leaders on strategy and new initiatives, based on an in-depth understanding of the business / group.
• Participate in the design of legal advice strategies & approaches for the unit activity and make recommendations to minimize legal issues.
• Act as the prime subject matter expert for internal / external stakeholders.
• Exercise judgement on complex, confidential and sensitive matters.
• Identify and resolve moderately complex issues.
• Determine root causes and negotiate resolutions.
• Deliver legal advice, instruct external counsel and ensure compliance with internal policies & procedures for a single or small number of functions.
• Act as a subject matter expert on relevant laws, regulations and policies.
• Resolve daily issues and / or escalates with appropriate analysis and / or recommendations.
• Identify risks and implement appropriate actions to mitigate them.
• Implement areas of improvement to ensure consistency with the marketplace.
• Build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Geographic scope : up to global.
• Operate at a group / enterprise-wide level and serve as a specialist resource to senior leaders and stakeholders.
• Apply expertise and think creatively to address unique or ambiguous situations and to find solutions to problems that can be complex and non‑routine.
• Implement changes in response to shifting trends.
• Broader work or accountabilities may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications

Salary : $132,600.00 - $247,000.00

Pay Type : Salaried

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part‑time roles will be pro‑rated based on the number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
