Class Summary
The City of Hudson is accepting applications from qualified Teamsters bargaining unit employees
for the position of Equipment Operator to perform skilled work in the operation of large complex
construction equipment in maintenance and construction activities. There is currently one (1) vacancy
in the Service Division of the Public Works Department.

CLASS SUMMARY
Works under the general supervision of division or department superintendent or designee and is
responsible for performing skilled work in the operation of large complex construction equipment
in maintenance and construction activities. An employee in this classification is responsible for
the basic preventative maintenance to and the operation of equipment requiring highly skilled
manipulation of controls and attachments in maneuvering for safe and efficient operations.
Employee must be able to utilize all equipment listed for this class.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Any one position may not include all the
duties listed nor do the listed examples include all duties which may be found in positions of this
class. Allocation of positions to this class will be determined on the amount of time spent in
performing the primary duties.)
Provides skilled labor for the operations of the division or department.
Drives truck for transporting fill materials, berming operations, plowing snow, ice removal and
spreading salt.
Operates bulldozer or front end loader for clearing ground, backfilling, loading trucks, rough and
finish grading; operates backhoe or trackhoe to ditch, to slope banks in ditches and to set storm
sewer pipe and culverts; operates road grader for berming and grading, ditching, removing snow,
repairing roads and other property improvement activities; operates backhoe to cut ditches, set or
operates leaf vacuum trailers to remove leaf debris within the public right of way; and any other
motorized equipment as may be assigned.
Makes daily inspection of assigned equipment, performs preventative maintenance and reports
major maintenance needs and mechanical problems.
Works closely with members of the general public; performs related work as required.
May assist with the various water distribution and sanitary sewer collection maintenance programs.
Operates a jet-vactor truck to clean sewers and manholes.
Must establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, vendors,
contractors, residents, City Officials and the general public.
Must provide a high level of customer service by being courteous, responsive, respectful and
helpful in all interactions with staff, superiors and the general public.
Must have regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
Must follow and comply with City rules and policies.
May substitute for other positions as instructed and / or instruct other operators or lower level
positions on the job as an assigned crew leader.
May be assigned to work in a variety of different departmental or divisional operations.
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather
conditions for extended periods of time with some conditions being very adverse.
The employee frequently works near moving mechanical equipment or equipment parts and
is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration.
The noise level in the work environment may vary from moderate to high.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from an accredited high school or G.E.D. and a minimum of two (2) years of work
experience operating large complex construction equipment.
Knowledge of and skill in the effective and safe operation of large, complex departmental
equipment.
Knowledge of the component parts of such equipment, the performance limits, and the
preventative maintenance necessary to keep equipment in satisfactory operation.
Knowledge of and ability to apply related safety procedures.
Knowledge of safety procedures in construction and in equipment operations.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance
instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively with the public and other employees.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out supervisor's instructions furnished
in written, oral, or diagram form. Skill in the use of personal computers, automated systems, laser
levels, etc.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with supervisors, employees,
vendors, residents, contractors, City officials and the general public.
LICENSE, CERTIFICATE, OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS (All required licenses and
certificates must be current, and the privileges granted under each cannot be suspended or
otherwise encumbered.)
Must possess a valid State of Ohio driver's license.
Possession of, or ability to obtain during the probationary period, a valid State of Ohio Class A
commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement.
