Certified Ophthalmic Technician

JOB SUMMARY

The Certified Ophthalmic Technician is either a Certified or Registered Medical Assistant. The Certified Ophthalmic Technician is responsible to assist ophthalmologists by performing various duties appropriate for their licensure level that are essential for patient care and so that patients receive the highest standard of service.

The Medical Assistant - Certified is responsible for assisting physicians, midlevel providers, and other clinical staff in providing medical services to patients with provider delegation within scope of practice. This position assists physicians with back-office duties.

The Medical Assistant-Registered (MA-R) works under the delegation of a licensed practitioner (e.g., RN, APC, MD / DO) to perform duties as directed to assist in providing patient care to assigned patients.

PRINCIPLE FUNCTIONS includes the following, other duties may be assigned :

Medical Assistant – Certified (MA-C) :

Performing clinical and clerical functions as necessary

  • Provide direct clinical support to a provider and staff.
  • Telephone and in-person screening limited to intake and gathering of information without requiring the exercise of judgment based on clinical knowledge.
  • Assure compliance of physician orders, pre-authorization, and other documentation through entry into the EMR.
  • Review and route patient / caregiver and provider’s calls to the appropriate party.
  • Review and route incoming faxes to the appropriate party.
  • Obtain vital signs and follow appropriate intake processes for visits.
  • Prepare and assist with minor office procedure, specialty exams and in-office treatments.
  • Administer medication and vaccinations with a provider order for both children and adults.
  • Perform EKG’s, PFT’s ear lavage and various point of care testing as requested by ordering provider.
  • Maintain exam rooms, stock and clean after every visit.
  • Provides other office support as needed.

Other Responsibilities

  • Attends and participates in all clinical staff and all staff meetings.
  • Attends and / or completes mandatory in-service education for clinic staff.
  • Remains responsible for identification of personal educational needs.
  • Maintain BLS and RQI standards as put forth by organization.
  • Medical Assistant – Registered (MA-R) :

    Demonstrate competency and perform only the medical tasks listed on the current Healthcare Practitioner Endorsement under the supervision of a healthcare practitioner as defined in RCW 18.360.010.

  • Perform duties delegated by and under the supervision of a healthcare practitioner in accordance with RCW 18.360.050 (4).
  • Delegated duties are specific to the unit / department and may include :
  • Maintaining medication and immunization records.
  • Screening and following up on test results as directed by a health care practitioner.
  • Diagnostic testing and electrocardiography.
  • Waived laboratory testing under the federal clinical laboratory improvement amendments.
  • Administering eye drops, topical ointments, and vaccines, including combination or multidose vaccines.
  • Medication administration according to a written order from the Healthcare Practitioner for drugs that are :

  • Administered only by unit or single dosage, or by a dosage calculated and verified by a health care practitioner.
  • Limited to legend drugs, vaccines, and Schedule III through V controlled substances as authorized by a health care practitioner under the scope of his or her license.
  • Administer medication for intramuscular injections.
  • Administer intramuscular injections for diagnostic or therapeutic agents under the immediate supervision of the Healthcare Practitioner only minimum established standards are met.
  • Responsible for completing and submitting an updated Healthcare Practitioner Endorsement to the Washington State Department of Health within 30 days of any changes made to delegated duties or supervision of a healthcare practitioner.
  • Responsible for sending a copy of any updated Healthcare Practitioner Endorsement as well as written verification the endorsement is accepted and active with the Washington State Department of Health to Human Resources
  • JOB KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS

    Education

    MA-C :

  • Highest level of education completed, minimum high school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Graduate of a Medical Assistant Program.
  • MA-R :

  • Highest level of education completed, minimum high school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Graduate of accredited school for medical assistants, or an equivalent combination of coursework, experience / training .
  • Training and Experience

    MA-C & MA-R :

  • A minimum of one (1) year experience as a medical assistant in a clinic setting is required.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

    Minimum Required MA-C & MA-R :

  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) by JCAHPO at hire.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) by JCAHPO within one (1) year from hire date.
  • MA-C :

  • WA State Medical Assistant Certification required.
  • American Heart Association BLS HCP required.
  • MA-R :

    Submission of the Medical Assistant – Registered Healthcare Practitioner Endorsement with the Washington Department of Health within 7 days of the start date.

    Copy of Healthcare Practitioner Endorsement to Human Resources.

    Active Washington Medical Assistant Registration within 60 days of hire

    Copy of written verification the endorsement is accepted and active with the Washington State Department of Health to Human Resources.

    Completion of all assigned unit / department specific checklists, including applicable CLIA competencies, supervised by a Healthcare Practitioner within 60 days of hire.

    Copy of all checklists and competencies to Human Resources.

  • American Heart Association BLS HCP required.
