The Underline is a bold idea to reclaim 10 miles of land beneath the Miami Metrorail and transform it into a beautiful, active green space that becomes a magnet for residents and visitors alike. Friends of The Underline (FUL) is a nonprofit organization driving the realization of an innovative multimodal trail and open space that connects Miamians.
Position Summary
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Manager of Safety and Security to oversee all aspects of safety and security across The Underline. This role is responsible for managing a team of security personnel, coordinating with public safety agencies, and implementing strategies to ensure a safe and welcoming experience for all visitors.
The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in public space security, emerging security technologies, emergency response planning, and team leadership. As a key member of The Underline’s operations team, you will collaborate closely with maintenance, horticulture, and community engagement staff to foster a culture of safety, belonging, and responsiveness.
Essential Function :
- Lead and supervise daily operations of The Underline’s security team.
- Develop and implement safety protocols tailored to a linear park environment.
- Coordinate with local police, fire, and emergency services for rapid response and collaboration.
- Monitor Park activity, respond to incidents, and ensure proper documentation and follow-up.
- Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments.
- Train staff in emergency procedures, de-escalation techniques, and public engagement.
- Plan and staff security for special events.
- Maintain security equipment and systems, including surveillance and communication tools.
- Report serious incidents and trends to leadership and recommend improvements.
- Stay current with best practices and emerging trends in public space security.
- Uphold and demonstrate leadership in all Underline policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications
Minimum 18 years of age; legally authorized to work in the U.S.Bachelor’s degree or equivalent certification required, degree in Criminal Justice, Public Safety, or related field preferred.5+ years of relevant experience in security management, ideally in parks, public spaces, or urban environments.CPR / First Aid certification preferred.Bilingual (English / Spanish) a plus.Strong leadership and team management skills.Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.Proven ability to build relationships with law enforcement, city officials, and community partners.Skilled in conflict resolution and emergency response.Comfortable working outdoors in a dynamic public environment.Detail-oriented with strong organizational and reporting skills.Physically able to lift up to 50 pounds and work in varying weather conditions.Capable of prolonged standing, walking, and occasional carrying, pushing, pulling, and reaching.Benefits
