Overview

The Special Education Building Coordinator provides leadership in planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating special education programming across Spring Creek Youth Services Center education program in alignment with the DYS Education Strategic Plan. The position supports special education teachers and paraprofessionals in all aspects of implementation of the Special Education Process through age 21. It also supports parents, administrators, teachers, school social workers, and other professional staff in meeting the needs of students in need of services. The purpose is to manage, develop, assess, and evaluate education program components and to develop program guidelines and standards to address the diverse needs of students at Spring Creek Youth Services Center.

Responsibilities

  • The Special Education Building Coordinator provides leadership in planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating special education programming across Spring Creek Youth Services Center education program in alignment with the DYS Education Strategic Plan. Supports special education teachers and paraprofessional staff in all aspects of implementation of the Special Education Process through age 21. Supports parents, administrators, teachers, school social workers, and other professional support staff in meeting the needs of students in need of services. Develops program guidelines and standards to address the diverse needs of students.
  • Special Education Administration : coordinate planning, implementing, and ensuring special education programming and child find processes are aligned with the DYS Education Strategies Plan, policies, and federal and state law. Duties include, but are not limited to :

Follow all rules and regulations of special education law including preparing reports for state and local indicators, submitting data to the Central office, scheduling meetings, and maintaining IEP records and related documents.

  • Facilitate Individual Education Program (IEP) meetings using a strength-based and family-centered approach.
  • Work with school administrators, community organizations, and state agencies to facilitate special education programming.
  • Ensure IEP distribution to staff participating in student's educational program.
  • Serve on school data and / or MTSS teams.
  • Serve on the DYS Special Education Advisory Team or other committees related to special education.
  • Serve as the special education provider and / or designee for all IEP meetings including referrals.
  • Consult with special education teachers on IEP development and scheduling.
  • Coordinate with the student's special education team to ensure all documents are completed in a timely manner prior to any IEP meeting, ensuring all team members, including parents, are prepared.
  • Special Education and Child Find Related Assessments : analyze and interpret test results, integrate findings, confer with team members, and relate assessment components to funding sources and agencies. Participate as a member of the multidisciplinary team to determine appropriate supports based on assessment data.
  • Class Support : provide support to students in general or special education classes to ensure the continuum of services is available and provided to youth on IEPs.
  • Qualifications

    Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a field related to the work.
  • Two (2) years of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work, preferably in special education teaching and / or administrative experience.
  • License

  • Current, valid Professional Teacher license issued by the Colorado Department of Education with an endorsement in Special Education.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Special Education
  • Experience with State service
  • Essential Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Experience writing Individual Education Programs
  • Knowledge and experience implementing IDEA within the school setting
  • Experience implementing articulated systems and structures with fidelity
  • Conditions Of Employment

  • Must be 21 years old or older
  • Must have a current and valid US driver's license
  • Must travel to training and events in the Denver area and other state facilities
  • CDE Teaching License with an endorsement in Special Education
  • Must have no felony convictions and no violent history
  • Able to pass Escape and Evade training
  • Full Background check : CBI name check and fingerprint check, ICON Colorado court database, Medicare fraud database, reference checks, professional license verification, drug screen, PREA, Trails check
  • The Diana Screen will be administered to all applicants to the Division of Youth Services seeking positions of trust with children and teens
  • Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must disclose information; prior termination may disqualify in the absence of extraordinary circumstances
  • Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of the DYS Pre-service Training Academy and mandatory annual training
  • Appeal Rights
