The minimum requirement to become an Architect in the US is to obtain a Bachelor of Architecture. The National Architecture Accrediting Board has a list of accredited schools offering Architecture programs nationwide. Most working Architects have their Masters of Architecture as well.
During your program, you will learn some theories of design and have several studio courses where you can begin to build your portfolio with hands-on projects.
Once you finish your schooling, you will need to become an accredited Architect. The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards provides a roadmap of how you can become licensed.
There are different requirements for Architects based on the state you live in, but most require some internship/work experience hours and the passing of the Architect Registration Examination exam. The exam is meant to assess your knowledge in health, safety, and welfare. The exam focuses on aspects that impact the integrity and structural soundness of a building.
