Job Summary

Under the direction of the Advanced Veterinary Surgery Center (AVSC) supervisor and Service Chiefs, provide technical support to the AVSC Surgical service. This position will float between AVSC and the VMTH depending on service needs. Responsibilities include but are not limited to OR circulation, surgical preparation for various procedures, aseptic preparation of patients for various surgical procedures, operating room set up, break down and providing post-surgical recovery of patients, patient treatments, diagnostic sample collection and performing technical skills such as patient restraint, IV catheter placement, blood draws, bandaging, and positioning and obtaining radiographs. Responsible for patient transport between AVSC and VMTH. Work cooperatively with others to foster strong team commitments towards achieving surgery services objectives.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and / or certification if required of the position

  • Must possess a Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP) or obtain within 3 months of date of hire.
  • Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies / procedures, and / or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
  • No minimum education required.
  • Experience in aseptic technique and circulation in an O.R.
  • Experience working in a veterinary hospital performing physical examinations and safe handling of multiple species.
  • Experience calculating drug dosages and administering medications intravenously, subcutaneously, intramuscular or orally.
  • Oral, written and interpersonal skills to work with a diverse group of people, including veterinary students, clients, clinicians, and staff.
  • Proficiency in collection of blood and urine samples, placement and maintenance of IV catheters.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience to recognize normal and abnormal parameters for patients and how to respond accordingly.
  • Experience setting up, operating and troubleshooting various specialized surgical equipment including but not limited to cautery, fluoroscopy and laparoscopic towers.
  • Experience with surgical asepsis and how it relates to direct contamination of patients, instruments and sterile supplies.
  • Experience in prioritizing and organizing workload without direct supervision.

    The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) is a unit that provides clinical case material in support of the teaching programs throughout the School of Veterinary Medicine on a 24-hour basis. Its primary objectives are to train professional (veterinary) students, graduate clinical students (interns and residents), and graduate academic students; to provide veterinary services to the public; to serve as a referral center for practicing veterinarians, and to advance veterinary medical knowledge.

    UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.     Work occasional overtime and various hours on short notice (including covering staff shortages, weekend and holiday shifts).
