The Water Technician III / IV works under the direction of the Water Superintendent to maintain, install, and repair water utility equipment in accordance with maintenance schedules.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Exercises water valves, repairs and / or replaces.

1.1 Locates and verifies placement of all water valves.

1.2 Cleans out valve boxes.

1.3 Exercises valves by opening and closing them.

1.4 Repairs and / or replaces valve and / or valve box as needed.

1.5 Maintains necessary records for maintenance management.

Exercises, flushes, repairs and / or replaces fire hydrants.

2.1 Unscrews all nozzles, greases the threads, and replaces caps.

2.2 Exercises gate valves by opening and closing them.

2.3 Unscrew caps to allow water to flush freely from the fire hydrant.

2.4 Repairs and / or replaces hydrants as needed.

2.5 Maintains necessary records for maintenance management.

Repair and / or replace water service lines, water mains and water meters.

3.1 Uncovers the water line.

3.2 Evaluate the problem and identify a solution.

3.3 Closes water valves to shut down extra flow of water, if needed.

3.4 Obtains appropriate repair supplies.

3.5 Repair leaks, possibly while under water pressure.

3.6 Replaces Road base and prepares the site for asphalt paving in accordance with City specifications.

3.7 Repairs or changes out water meters, recording new and old information (meter numbers, usage readings, and other information requested by utility billing).

Installs and / or inspects new water mains, water lines, and water meters.

4.1 Determines size of water main required and obtains appropriate supplies, or verify proper materials are used and installation is completed in accordance with applicable codes.

4.2 Uncover the ground where the line is to be located and prepare the bedding with compacted sand or other appropriate base, and verifies proper grading, if needed.

4.3 Installs chlorinates, and tests (pressure and coliform) water line or oversees the completion of the process.

4.4 Install new service lines and / or water meters, as needed.

4.5 Pulls water sample in accordance with State requirements and submits to the approved testing lab.

4.6 Backfills trench according to City specifications and places lines in service.

Inspects water system cross-connections.

5.1 Meets with business owners to determine where and how water is used.

5.2 Notifies owners of corrections and / or backflow devices required.

5.3 Tests city-owned backflow assemblies and repairs and / or replaces, as needed.

5.4 Reviews backflow test results and notifies supervisor of concerns.

Oversees functions of wells and county connections.

6.1 Cleans tanks and reservoirs.

6.2 Tests water sources monthly.

6.3 Monitors businesses for possible discharge of hazardous materials into the water supply.

6.4 Monitors well sources and county connections to determine adequate water production.

Performs acid treatments on wells.

7.1 Obtains necessary permits and plans.

7.2 Mixes and injects many different chemicals used to clean potable water wells.

7.3 Extracts and neutralizes chemicals after well cleaning.

7.4 Sanitizes well after cleaning.

7.5 Pulls water sample per State requirements and submits to the approved testing lab.

7.6 Obtains an operating permit before using the well.

  • Rotates on-call status for response to water system problems and scheduled well checks as assigned.
  • Any water department personnel may be assigned to assist with reading meters, if necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, plus some specialized training in a closely related field, or any equivalent combination of related education and experience.
  • Must possess a current Utah State Water Certification Grade 3 or 4 or have the ability to obtain within one year.
  • Must possess a valid state driver's license with Class A CDL endorsement (including Tanker endorsements) or have the ability to obtain one within six months of employment.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in public water supply and distribution systems.
  • Skill in the operation of backhoe, dump truck, jackhammer, hot tap machine, tamper, compressor, concrete cutter, cut off saw, and various hand tools.
  • Ability to operate and maintain equipment used in water maintenance and repair; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and / or humid conditions.

The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
