Job Overview :
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Controller to join our team at Heavy Road & Rail Inc., a leading construction company. The Controller will oversee all financial and accounting activities, ensuring that financial records are accurate, timely, and in compliance with industry standards and regulations. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in accounting and finance, particularly within the construction industry, and will provide strategic financial leadership to the company’s management team.
Key Responsibilities :
Financial Reporting & Analysis :Prepare, review, and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and construction industry standards.
Analyze financial results and provide insights into business performance, including variances from budget, projections, and historical trends.Develop and manage cash flow forecasting to ensure liquidity for ongoing projects.Project Financial Management :Collaborate with project managers and field teams to monitor project budgets and expenditures, ensuring financial performance aligns with project goals.
Review job cost reports and work-in-progress (WIP) schedules, identifying and addressing any discrepancies.Manage the accounting of contracts, subcontracts, and change orders, ensuring all terms are properly documented and adhered to.Budgeting & Forecasting :Develop and oversee the preparation of annual budgets for the company and individual projects.
Lead the forecasting process to assess financial performance for both short- and long-term business planning.Provide regular reports and financial insights to senior management to inform strategic decision-making.Internal Controls & Compliance :Design and implement internal control procedures to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
Ensure compliance with all tax filings, insurance requirements, and construction-specific regulations (e.g., prevailing wage laws, bonding).Coordinate with external auditors during the annual audit process, ensuring timely and efficient completion.Team Leadership & Development :Lead and manage the accounting department, including hiring, training, and mentoring staff.
Promote a culture of continuous improvement within the department by identifying areas for efficiency enhancements and cost reductions.Ensure that the accounting team has the necessary tools and training to accurately track costs and report on financial performance.Tax & Regulatory Oversight :Oversee the preparation of tax returns and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws.
Manage relationships with tax advisors and external financial consultants.Qualifications :
Education :Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or CMA (Certified Management Accountant) certification preferred.
Experience :Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role, preferably in the construction industry.
Strong knowledge of construction accounting, including job costing, project profitability analysis, and contract management.Experience with construction accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Viewpoint) and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, etc.).Skills & Competencies :Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Strong understanding of financial regulations and accounting principles specific to the construction industry.Proven leadership abilities with experience managing teams.Ability to communicate complex financial information effectively to non-financial stakeholders.High attention to detail and accuracy in financial reporting.Work Environment :
Office-based with occasional site visits to construction projects.hc184955
