San Mateo County Health is seeking an experienced Supervising Dietitian - Spanish Speaking Preferred to fill a Regular / Full-Time position for the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program within Family Health Services. The Supervising Dietitian serves as the main contact for community workers and degreed nutritionists who are providing services to WIC participants in the Redwood City office. The Supervising Dietitian will also manage customer flow, provide guidance and mentoring to staff, and ensure appropriate nutrition counseling is provided.

The ideal candidate will have one to two years of supervisory experience, as well as one to two years of experience in WIC. The ideal candidate will also have great interpersonal skills and a passion and experience in public health nutrition, especially with families with young children. Fluency in Spanish is preferred but not required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Supervising Dietitian is the full supervisory level in the Dietitian series. Supervision includes the selection, training, evaluation and disciplining of employees. Incumbents also perform a full range of dietitian duties.

Examples Of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following :

  • Plan, assign, direct and review the work of Dietitians, dietetic technicians, interns and other staff assigned to the unit.
  • Evaluate and document employee performance on an ongoing basis, including periodic written evaluations for personnel records.
  • Confer with medical or nursing staff and develop therapeutic diets for patients or clients.
  • Provide consultation for dietitians regarding nutrition plans and services; supervise difficult or complex cases.
  • Counsel patients or WIC participants on nutritional care plans, appropriate diets specific for specific health concerns.
  • Coordinate Quality and Performance Improvement programs for nutrition standards and protocols, initiate and complete appropriate Quality Assurance reports.
  • Oversee projects aimed at creating healthier environments and / or making healthy eating choices easier for communities / population groups at-risk of poor nutrition.
  • Assist management with support services such as recruitment and selection of staff; development of nutrition standards and protocols, policy and procedures manuals, training programs, reports and correspondence; and / or budgeting for and purchasing of food supplies.
  • Provide technical consultation and training to County staff and staff of community agencies.
  • Partner with and speak to community groups on nutrition and healthy eating issues.
  • Participate in the acquisition and / or development of nutrition education materials.
  • Perform nutritional assessments using anthropometric, biochemical, clinical and dietary data.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Example of Duties for Supervising Dietitians assigned to the Family Health Services also include the following :

  • Provide breast feeding support, counseling and education to participants.
  • Provide nutrition education to school aged children and members of the community.
  • Determine nutritional risk of program participants.
  • Design child nutrition classes.
  • Training team members on and making referrals to various home visiting programs in the County for qualifying families and children.
  • Lead monthly team meetings with staff and attend monthly supervisor's meetings.
  • Coordinate resolution of maintenance issues at assigned work location.
  • Participate in the development of the Nutrition Services Plan.
  • Develop nutrition education work plans in coordination with community partners.
  • Specific positions may have responsibility for developing and executing grant-funded public health projects including strategic planning, and program budget tracking.
  • Qualifications

    License :

  • Registration or eligibility for registration as a Dietitian through the Commission of Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association. Full registration must be achieved before successful completion of probationary status.
  • Education and Experience : Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is :

  • Education : A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in food, nutrition, dietetics or a closely related field and completion of an internship in a program accredited by the American Dietetic Association.
  • Experience : Two years of professional work experience in :
  • Public Health Nutrition Programs - Providing nutrition education and / or counseling services to families, school students, women with infants and young children up to age five in a community or public health setting.

    Knowledge of :

  • Principles and practices of supervision and training.
  • Current principles of nutritional management in health and disease.
  • Nutrition basics and dietary prescriptions for all ages.
  • Nutritional needs throughout the life cycle.
  • Counseling and interviewing techniques.
  • Additionally, if assigned to WIC Program or other Family Health Services programs, you must have knowledge of :

  • Nutrition counseling services for women with infants and young children up to age five in a community or public health setting.
  • Nutrition basics specific to infants, young children, pediatrics pregnant, breastfeeding or in postpartum mothers.
  • Problems, needs, attitudes and behavior patterns of disadvantaged individuals and of the total community served.
  • Community conditions that affect access to healthy food for low-income residents
  • Government-funded health and dental insurance programs for low income families and the dietary products approved / provided by these programs.
  • Community issues that impact nutrition, obesity and related health conditions.
  • State grants and funding requirements as it relates to public health nutrition programs if assigned to coordinate grant-funded public health programs.
  • Skill / Ability to :

  • Plan, organize, supervise and evaluate the work of assigned staff.
  • Instruct and train subordinate staff.
  • Maintain records.
  • Prepare clear, concise reports and correspondence.
  • Operate standard office equipment, including a computer terminal.
  • Communicate effectively with professional medical staff, program participants, kitchen workers, community organizations, and the public.
  • Plan and present nutrition training and classes.
  • Work cooperatively as a member of a team.
  • Estimate quantities needed for groups of varying sizes.
  • Assess nutritional risk and prioritize diet intervention nutrition counseling.
  • Work with low-income families and understand cultural differences.
  • Maintain internal and external partnerships if assigned to coordinate grant-funded public health programs.

Current County of San Mateo and County of San Mateo Superior Court of California employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, extra-help / limited term positions prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score on this examination.

    The examination process will consist of an application screening (weight : pass / fail) based on the candidates' application and responses to the supplemental questions. Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to a panel interview (weight : 100%). Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification. All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.
