BioFire Defense is seeking an experienced Information Systems Security Engineer II (ISSE) to join our IT team. As the ISSE, your primary administrative responsibilities include, designing, implementing, and maintaining security measures to protect the organizations information systems, applications and data. This role involves monitoring, assessing risk, responding to security incidents, developing security solutions and ensuring compliance with industry standards and federal regulations.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Security Design & Implementation : Develop and implement security controls, policies, and procedures to protect information systems from unauthorized access, vulnerabilities, and threats.
  • Risk Assessment : Conduct regular risk assessments and vulnerability scans to identify potential security weaknesses and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Incident Response : Assist in investigating and responding to security incidents, including analyzing root causes and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Compliance & Audits : Ensure systems comply with relevant regulations and standards (e.g., CMMC Level 2, NIST 800-171 & 53). Support internal and external audits as needed.
  • System Monitoring : Monitor network traffic, system logs, and security tools to detect and respond to potential threats in real time.
  • Collaboration : Work closely with IT, development, and operations teams to integrate security best practices into system design, development, and deployment processes.
  • Security Awareness : Assist in developing and delivering security awareness training to employees to promote a culture of cybersecurity.
  • Tool Management : Configure, maintain, and optimize security tools such as firewalls, intrusion detection / prevention systems (IDS / IPS), and endpoint protection solutions.
  • Documentation : Maintain detailed documentation of security configurations, procedures, and incident reports.
  • Emerging Threats : Stay informed about the latest cybersecurity threats, trends, and technologies to proactively enhance the organizations security posture.

Secondarily, general IT administrative duties may be required, as needed, and will consist of assisting with the design, implementation, documentation and maintenance of business system infrastructure and applications. Previous Information Systems Engineering experience is helpful to satisfy this requirement.

Being part of the IT Team at BioFire Defense will allow you the opportunity to work with a wide variety of both best-of-breed technologies and all-encompassing platforms. As well as help research, acquire, and implement new technologies as they are needed.

You will be involved as a key contributor to the IT team in managing and maintaining business system infrastructure and its overall security posture, as well as assisting in other critical IT related activities as directed by the IT management.

Qualifications :

Education : Formal education degrees are considered but are not required. Applicable industry certificates and years of real-world experience hold more value to the potential of the candidate.

Certifications : CCP (Certified CMMC Professional) CompTIA, CEH, CISSP / CCSP, CISM / CISA, GIAC Security Essentials Certification (GSEC) will elevate the candidates value but are not required.

Experience :

Qualifying candidates should have 5-7 years of experience in information security or a related IT role, with a majority of that experience as hands-on in a security engineer role. Familiarity and / or experience with current federal government security regulatory requirements as well as previous roles as an ISSO (Information Systems Security Officer) or ISSM (Information Systems Security Manager) is highly valued. Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Personnel Security Clearance.

Technical skill expectations :

Familiarity with and / or industry relevant experience in the following areas : M365 administration, Cybersecurity, Windows and Linux Server OS, Virtualization, Networking, Storage, Backups, Software Management, Databases management, and Azure and AWS cloud infrastructure. An understanding of various cybersecurity concepts, including threat modeling, risk management and security protocols. Expertise in security tools and technologies such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, SIEMs, antivirus software and encryption technologies.

Soft skill expectations :

Must have strong communication skills, both verbal and written. Must have the ability to document complex procedures with clarity and reproducibility. Must be resourceful and can problem-solve in an effective and efficient manner. Candidates must have a customer service-oriented mindset and the ability to work with colleagues of all levels of IT aptitude. The ideal candidate is proactive, detail-oriented, and requires a strong understanding of cybersecurity principles, security technologies and risk management practices.
