Job Overview

The Assistant Director of Special Events for Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) is responsible for assisting the Senior Director in developing, supervising, and implementing the overall program for GUMC fundraising, cultivation and stewardship events - and for raising funds primarily from non-direct event fundraising activities (in-kind donations and revenue generated from auctions, raffles, appeals and other event-related activities).

They are responsible for all assigned event logistics for specific events, including but not limited to Lombardi Gala, Men’s Event, Lombardi Women, GUMC Events and other fundraising and major gift cultivation events as assigned.

Additionally, they assist the Senior Director in recommending, developing, organizing, and producing events to external audiences that reflect the Georgetown University image of excellence and integrity;

and stands in as needed representing the Senior Director.

As assigned, the Assistant Director takes a management role, in the following auction programs :

  • Lombardi Gala Silent Auction
  • Lombardi Women Silent Auction

They directly manage donor relationships with major giving prospects, solicit gifts, and manage and support fundraising volunteers.

They also manage a variety of financial responsibilities, with the support of the Events Coordinator, GUMC for example :

  • Contracts
  • Invoices
  • Gift Accounting and Recognition

Finally, they are responsible for data entry, management and upkeep related not only to events, but also to individual prospect / donor / volunteer relationships.

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

Reporting directly to the Senior Director of GUMC Special Events, the Assistant Director of Special Events supervises volunteers for various fundraising events and assists the Senior Director in the development of policies and procedures related to fundraising events.

As well, they interact when appropriate with units within the GUMC, Central Advancement, and other offices within Georgetown University;

and works with General Accounting regarding accounting and reconciliation of auction items and funds received for the year-end financial audit.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 2 to 3 years of progressive fundraising and event experience - in an academic medical center
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to handle a large number of complex and diverse tasks requiring in-depth analysis and quality performance
  • Competency in the use of personal computers and development and standard office support software
  • Experience in working with large volunteer leadership committees in support of major gift fundraising event initiatives
  • Successful experience with personal gift and volunteer solicitations
  • Demonstrated experience in event promotion on social media - , Instagram, LinkedIn
