Inspector III - Code Enforcement
The Inspector III is responsible for ensuring compliance with the City's Municipal Code through field inspections, investigation of violations, and collaboration with a diverse, bilingual community. This position requires a proactive approach to resolving code violations, ensuring that properties meet city standards, and contributing to the safety and aesthetic integrity of the community. The Inspector will work with residents to promote voluntary compliance, while maintaining a balance between enforcement and respect for private property rights. This role requires the use of initiative, independent judgment, and regular collaboration with various city departments and community organizations.
Field Inspections : Conduct inspections in assigned areas to identify violations of the Municipal Code, including but not limited to : substandard housing, dilapidated structures, trash and debris, illegal dumping, overgrown vegetation, and abandoned vehicles.
Consultation with Property Owners : Work directly with property owners to inform them of violations and explain necessary corrective actions to achieve compliance.
Citizen Interaction : Respond to public inquiries, complaints, and concerns related to code enforcement. Provide feedback and guidance to help resolve violations.
Complaint Resolution : Log, track, and investigate complaints via phone or in person. Determine code violations and initiate appropriate actions, such as issuing notices or compliance letters.
Reporting & Documentation : Maintain accurate records, including daily reports, inspection details, and violation notices. Document all actions taken, including follow-up inspections and any legal proceedings.
Legal Proceedings : Prepare for and potentially testify in court hearings or other legal actions related to code violations when voluntary compliance is not achieved.
Collaboration : Communicate regularly with other city departments and external organizations to address violations, resolve issues, and ensure compliance.
Community Engagement : Encourage and support local community groups in organizing neighborhood clean-up efforts and self-help programs.
Travel : Drive a City vehicle to and from inspection sites and between assigned territories.
Professional Development : Stay up-to-date with code enforcement regulations, attend seminars, and participate in relevant training to enhance knowledge and skills.
Must have and maintain, without interruption, all necessary licenses, certifications, clearances, and / or job requirements. Work the assigned schedule and comply with City timekeeping and attendance policy. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
High school diploma or equivalent (college coursework preferred). Texas Code Enforcement Officer License, or ability to obtain Texas Code Enforcement Officer-In-Training License within 6 months of employment. Valid Texas driver's license and good driving record.
PREFERRED : Bilingual (English / Spanish) is desired. One to two years of related experience, or a combination of experience, training, and college education.
