Overview

Process Engineer / Analyst – Generation, Renewables, & Gas (Birmingham or Atlanta)

Environmental Solutions in Technical Shared Services is seeking a Process Engineer who will provide corporate engineering support for Southern Company's power generation fleet. The role includes a mix of field and office work supporting projects in electric generating plants, including current and future water treatment, wastewater treatment, air emissions control and other chemical processes.

Location and Travel

This position is flexible to be located in either Alabama (Birmingham) or Georgia (Atlanta).
This position requires travel (up to 50%), including day trips, overnight travel, and some air travel.
A mix of field and office work is required.
Relocation assistance is available if the selected candidate currently resides outside the Birmingham or Atlanta area.

Primary Responsibilities

Provide corporate support for wastewater and ash systems across the Southern Company System

Develop and review design basis documentation and technical specifications

Review engineered drawings to ensure compliance with company specifications, guidelines, codes, and regulations

Troubleshoot plant processes across the fleet and analyze data for process improvements

Design and execute pilot programs and / or testing for future plants and environmental compliance

Support research and development with pilot programs

Communicate complex topics effectively to internal and external stakeholders

Collaborate with various stakeholders across Southern Company

Position Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree required

BS Engineering preferred (Chemical Engineering a plus)

Other degrees (e.g., chemistry or biology) may be considered with relevant operations experience

Experience

At least 2 years of experience in heavy industrial processes (power generation, paper mill, petrochemical, refinery, gas operations, pipeline, etc.)

Operations experience in a plant environment preferred

Optimization and complex troubleshooting of mechanical and chemical processes preferred

Previous project management experience highly desired

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge of fossil-fueled combustion systems and pollutant emission control systems

Strong analytical ability and problem-solving skills

Ability to manage multiple projects with varying deadlines and priorities

Strong oral and written communication skills

Strong presentation skills

Proficiency in Microsoft SharePoint, Power Automate, and PowerApps is a plus

Familiarity with process safety and inherently safe design principles
