Job Title : Biomedical Equipment Technician

Department : Biomedical Engineering

Reports To : Facility Manager

Job Summary : This position performs installation, repair, and preventative maintenance on the Cayuga Health System medical equipment and systems.

Key responsibilities include the verification and adjustment to established performance specifications for electronic patient care equipment.

Assists other trades as needed with electronic control problems. Independent judgment and time management is required for handling details of each job.

Job Responsibilities include :

  • Safety
  • Demonstrates an understanding of emergency procedures, fire drills, evacuation procedures, and internal / external disaster procedures, as outlined in the fire safety policy, knows personal role in the event of a fire while on duty.

Exceeds : Understands fire alarm system and equipment. Can properly reset the system, demonstrates the ability to place certain points or zones on hold and troubleshoot problems.

  • Provides a safe environment; demonstrates alertness to areas needing attention in avoiding unsafe conditions such as but not limited to : wet flooring, blocked egress areas etc.
  • Maintains work area in a clean and safe manner on a daily basis.
  • Always wears all personal protective equipment when required.
  • Carries out duties in a safe professional manner, with focus on customer service as a high priority. Exceeds : No substantiated complaints from patients, physicians, staff & visitors.
  • Anticipates potential and environmental safety hazards and takes appropriate actions.
  • Equipment in need of repair is reported (via computer), tagged and placed out of use.
  • Emergency Response
  • Availability for on call duty when / as required.
  • Works additional hours if required, including occasional shift changes due to work assignments. Exceeds : on occasion voluntarily offers to change primary work schedule to accommodate work assigned.
  • Participates in availability for unscheduled Emergencies when they occur.
  • Systems and Equipment Maintenance
  • Maintains and services designated pieces of Cayuga Health System clinical equipment.
  • Troubleshoots equipment form broad level to component level depending on equipment type.
  • Maintains electrical safety and preventative maintenance programs on equipment.
  • Removes any equipment from service that does not meet established performance standards.
  • Installs new equipment in accordance with manufactures and Cayuga Health System standards.
  • Performs minor repairs or replacements to the digital TV System equipment. Exceeds : Corrects patient television system problems during off hours.
  • Maintains the hospital tube System and makes necessary repairs when offline. Exceeds : Makes necessary repairs to get the system back on line during off hours.
  • Systems and Equipment Operations
  • Assists in the instruction of the Cayuga Health System staff in the use and operation of clinical equipment.
  • Maintains current knowledge levels on designated Cayuga Health system clinical equipment.
  • Investigates and takes action on complaints. Exceeds : Participates in creating or responding to equipment incident reports.
  • Assists in the implementation and operation of the Telemetry System.
  • Exceeds : Assists and executes preventive maintenance on the hospitals ventilator equipment in coordination with the Respiratory Therapy department.
  • Assists in the maintenance of new replacement equipment not limited to pumps and the Operating Room boom equipment.
  • Ability to perform and complete work at various sites throughout the healthcare
  • Assists Plant maintenance in the upkeep of the medical gas system.
  • Provides Operational suggestions that improve performance.
  • Facility Support
  • Availability for On-Call weekly schedule duty when / as required. (Requirement for employees hired after 2020)
  • Maintains tools and equipment. Exceeds : Helps Facility manger with annual Capital Requests and Budget processes.
  • Participates in the Joint Commissions accreditation process when reviewing Medical Equipment. Exceeds : No elements of performance found deficient.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Informational Management
  • Accurately uses the hospital information system to enter and retrieve maintenance data.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and use of the work order management process.
  • Maintains effective control of inventory levels.
  • Accurately completes monthly equipment reporting on preventive maintenance requirements.
  • Maintains tools and equipment. Exceeds : Helps Facility manger with annual Capital Requests and Budget processes.

Requirements :

Education - Associate Degree in Bio - Medical Electronics.

Experience - Candidate will possess minimum of two years' experience that was obtained in a hospital environment. The candidate will have a working knowledge of bio - medical electrical codes, schematics, and system standards.

Manual dexterity skills include eye had coordination. This position may require the use of a personal or company vehicle to relocate or repair equipment at satellite locations.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills required.

Licensure - Valid and clean NYS Driver's License

Physical Requirements - This position requires the ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Requirements also include climbing, bending, and the ability to get into tight spaces while working off a ladder.
