Job Description

Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities for all functions involving planning and conducting written and practical examinations of cosmetology and barber students and individuals practicing cosmetology or barbering to ensure compliance with standard examination criteria, rules, regulations, and laws.

This includes administering on-site comprehensive practical and written examinations for certification and licensure of applicants as a cosmetologist or barber and evaluation of individual skills and abilities in performing various cosmetology or barbering tasks and procedures.

This may include responsibility for oversight of tests conducted by others who are assigned to assist in completing examinations for large groups and will include giving verbal instructions / directions and accurately grading assessments.

Typical Functions

  • Administers examinations to determine qualifications to practice cosmetology or barbering; conducts written and practical tests to evaluate knowledge and skills concerning cosmetology or barber rules and regulations and the ability to perform various cosmetology or barber tasks and procedures.
  • Maintains test material and other information concerning examinations; assigned responsibility for security and maintenance of test facility.
  • Prepares reports on examinations or other activities.
  • Schedules tests, creates permits, and mails packets.
  • Composes and mails tests notices.
  • Maintains the physical environment of testing facility including sanitation, safety, and reporting of all incidents.

Level Descriptor

The Cosmetology / Barber Examiner job family consists of only one level, and applicants must hold both an OSBCB issued Master Instructor of Cosmetology and Master Barber Instructor license.

This position will be responsible for performing all functions involving planning and conducting examinations of individuals relevant to cosmetology and barbering.

This includes administering a comprehensive practical and written examination for certification and licensure of applicants as a cosmetologist or barber and evaluation of individual skills and abilities in performing various cosmetology or barbering tasks and procedures.

Education and Experience

The Cosmetology / Barber Examiner job family consists of only one level, and applicants must currently hold both a Master Instructor of Cosmetology and Master Barber Instructor license issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering.

Education and experience requirements at this level consist of three years of teaching experience as an instructor in the practice of cosmetology and / or barbering.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies

Knowledge, skills, and abilities required include knowledge of state laws, rules and regulations concerning the practice of cosmetology and barbering;

of test procedures and security; and of various tasks and procedures performed during the licensure examination for cosmetologists and barbers.

  • Ability is required to plan and conduct examinations and interviews; to analyze performances and make sound decisions; to organize and present facts clearly and concisely;
  • to perform various cosmetology and barbering tasks and procedures; to communicate effectively with people from a variety of cultures;

and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Special Requirements

Applicants must be willing and able to perform all job-related travel normally associated with this position and accounts for less than 10% of the typical job duties.

Incumbents must possess a valid Oklahoma Driver’s license to operate state-owned vehicles and must maintain a good driving record.

While in travel status per diem is paid at the GSA rate.
