Summary :

The role of the Paralegal is designed to be an extension of the Director of Expert Services ( DES ). The Paralegal manages activities that concern the Company’s expert legal matters.

The Paralegal will be responsible for managing expert challenges, and state-specific civil procedures, assisting in responding to subpoenas, and monitoring dockets.

Essential Job Functions :

  • Assist in responses to Daubert, Frye, Rule 702, and other challenges.
  • Maintain files on challenges and strikes for all experts.
  • Standardize and implement the process of challenges, and assertions used to manage open challenges.
  • Maintain a Masterfile of recurring, and standardized responses.
  • Maintain and manage standardized, redundant post-deposition preemptive challenge follow-up process.
  • Assist in filing petitions of reconsideration in cases in which experts have been disqualified.
  • Establish narratives for each disqualified expert to assist them in effectively answering questions regarding previous disqualifications.
  • Conduct research and maintain a state-specific Masterfile pertaining to state-specific rules and requirements, e.g. civil procedures, appeal processes, use of collateral sources, requirements to formulate damages in present value, rules regarding payment of experts, damages caps, business environment, etc.
  • Assist in responding to all subpoenas.
  • Monitor Westlaw, LexisNexis, and / or other legal platforms to determine when challenges are issued.
  • Data mining Westlaw, LexisNexis, and / or other legal platforms for business development purposes.
  • Manage the designation of company experts.

Education and Experience :

  • Associate degree or higher and / or Paralegal certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of legal experience, litigation experience preferred, primarily managing expert challenges and state-specific civil procedures
  • Strong knowledge of legal principles and procedures
  • Practical experience with Westlaw and / or LexisNexis

Other Prerequisites :

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical abilities, and strong attention to detail.

Work Schedule :

  • 5 day / 40 hour work week : Mon Fri 8 : 30am 5 : 30pm (on-site).
  • Work outside the 40-hour work week may be required and will be based on business needs.
