POSITION SUMMARY
The Academic Coach - Chemistry for The Excelerator at SCC provides personalized academic support, focusing on student success in a wide range of courses and disciplines. This role involves coaching students on effective study techniques, time management, and goal setting, while coordinating workshops, tutoring sessions, and collaborating with faculty to enhance the student experience. SCC is particularly interested in team members with a passion for student success and the drive to ensure students are maximizing their potential at the college.
In this role, the Academic Coach will provide one-on-one coaching to students, focusing on study techniques, time management, and strategies for mastering their respective subject. The coach will actively promote tutoring and coaching services on and off campus for their respective discipline, encouraging students to seek assistance and utilize the robust services The Excelerator is offering. Support the Director in developing marketing strategies to increase participation in their respective discipline. Academic Coaches must work closely with faculty, advisors, and other campuses regarding their respective disciplines, ensuring students have access to resources for comprehensive academic support. The Coach must participate in campus-wide initiatives aimed at improving student retention and student success in their field of discipline.
SCC has numerous discipline-focused tutors at the institution : Biology, Chemistry, Math, and Writing. Although the foundation of The Academic Coach is the same, each discipline will require different knowledge, experience, and criteria to be met. The Coach will help students to apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills, lead workshops on respective disciplines, including scientific and generic study strategies, lab techniques (as necessary), and exam preparation. They must also contribute to the development and assessment of tools that measure the effectiveness of tutoring and coaching services for their discipline. These are some of the responsibilities required :
Chemistry - Assist students with challenging topics within the field of beginning and advanced chemistry (with or without lab). Physics knowledge and experience, preferred.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in appropriate supported discipline (Chemistry) or related field. Six (6) months experience tutoring or student services within a Higher Education institution or Master's degree preferred. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills required.
