Position Summary Information
General Description of Position
Under the general supervision of the Dean, Associate Dean, and / or Program Chair Manufacturing / Transportation, the Adjunct Instructor is responsible for instructing students in various courses in a classroom / laboratory setting. Teaching assignments for this position include but are not limited to, Commercial Carrier Driver Training.
The instructor develops course objectives, implements teaching strategies, advises students, monitors and evaluates student progress, and keeps accurate student records. This is a part-time temporary position.
Essential Functions
Provide Instruction in Assigned Subject Areas Provide instruction to students according to the objectives of each course assigned. This course includes Commercial Carrier Driver Training. This instructor will utilize a variety of instructional strategies in the classroom / laboratory that include, but are not limited to, lecture, small groups, and demonstrations.
Provide for Student Evaluation and Record Keeping
Prepare and administer student evaluation instruments and maintain accurate student records on attendance, achievement, and progress.
Remain Current in Events and Developments Related to Subject Area
Increase and improve personal teaching and subject knowledge through supplemental sources such as in-service activities, conferences, workshops, technical updates, and personal self-study.
Participate in Division and College Meetings and Committees
Attend division / college staff meetings and serve on committees. Attend and participate in program advisory committee meetings.
Serves as an Academic Advisor for Students Serves as academic advisor to afternoon / evening students. Tasks included in this area are : advise students on their academic progress, courses needed for graduation, and division / college policies and procedures; and generally serve as the first line of communication between students and the college staff.
Develop / Revise Course Curriculum and Educational Materials
Develop and / or revise course objectives, content, descriptions, and instructional strategies on approved college curriculum form. In addition, the instructor will develop, revise and maintain classroom / laboratory policies, grading structures, and strategies. This instructor will review, evaluate and recommend textbooks for course use.
Function as a Member of the Professional Truck Driver Training Program Team
Interact with colleagues, students, staff, and supervisors in a manner which will project a positive image of the program and the College and which promotes / facilitates instructional services such as recruitment, placement, and orientation as assigned.
Perform Other Functions Related to Teaching Assignments
Administer commercial driver's license examination in these areas : backing test and road test.
Individualized Development Plan (New Instructors)
Each new instructor will develop an individualized development plan in cooperation with the Vice President of Instruction. Professional Development Faculty should work with their immediate supervisor to develop an annual plan of professional development and improvement.
May be assigned duties as Program Chair.
The Program Chair / Instructor is responsible for instructing students in various courses in a classroom / laboratory setting. Teaching assignments for this position include, but are not limited to, Commercial Carrier Driver Training. The instructor develops course objectives, implements teaching strategies, advises students, monitors and evaluates student progress and keeps accurate student records.

Marginal Functions
1. Operate and utilize as part of the teaching process appropriate audio-visual equipment including but not limited to overhead projector, television / video recordings, and movie projector.
2. Provide information and data that will assist in the preparation of budgets, course schedules, vehicle condition reports and other required reports.
3. Serve as a substitute instructor within the program when needed as assigned by the Program Chair or Dean.
4. Perform other related duties within division / program as assigned.
5. May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions / programs / areas as required.
6. Perform other College functions and duties as assigned.
7. Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Current DOT knowledge of and experience in driving conditions, hazardous perception, speed management, how to read traffic, coupling and uncoupling trailers, and proficiency development in backing, shifting, concourse driving and city, two-lane and interstate driving.
2. At least two years work experience as an over-the-road driver of a commercial tractor trailer.
3. Be able to relate to colleagues, staff, students, and supervisors in a positive and cooperative manner.
4. Ability to apply and demonstrate effective communication skills.
5. Ability to develop and incorporate a variety of teaching strategies and techniques in the classroom / laboratory.
6. Ability to devise and utilize appropriate evaluation methods for classroom / laboratory use.
7.Possess a valid commercial driver's license, Class A.
8. Ability to evaluate skills activities in backing and road driving.
9. Knowledge of and skill in the operation of cabover and conventional tractors with 7, 9, 10, 13 and 16 speed transmissions.
10. Skill in the operation of a tractor pulling 40', 45', 48' and 53' trailers.
11. Ability to work outside in cold temperatures below 10 degrees and in heat above 100 degrees for one hour periods of time.
12. Ability to enter and exit cabover and conventional tractors.
13. The individual must possess the skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum of two (2) years of recent work experience as an over-the-road driver of a commercial tractor / trailer.
- Must possess and maintain a valid commercial driver's license, Class A.
