Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent and 2 years of professional experience

Position Summary:

This position involves the development, maintenance, and support of decision support tools and application programming interfaces vital to Precision Sustainable Ag (PSA). Additionally, it involves overseeing the development and upkeep of AESL’s Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). This system plays a critical role in managing equipment automation, sample submissions, reporting, accounting, quality control, auditing, and result dissemination to Extension offices. The LIMS also generates financial reports for administrative purposes and for the Board of Regents.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

  • Advanced Web development skills in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Ajax, and ASP.
  • Proficiency in at least one high-level Windows programming language.
  • Advanced database skills, specifically creating SQL queries.
  • Advanced Excel skills.
  • Advanced software troubleshooting skills.
  • Understanding of basic accounting principles.
  • Network administration skills, specifically Windows Server and IIS.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical information to staff and management.

  • Develop, maintain, and document the AESL laboratory information management system (LIMS).
  • Develop, support, and maintain software for AESL laboratories, including reporting, quality assurance, quality control, accounting, summaries, mapping, and custom automation scripts.
  • Lead weekly meetings with IT, Accounting, and Lab management teams
  • Actively seek out ways to better serve internal and external continuities through the analysis, development, and deployment of software for distribution of data to UGA Extension County offices, researchers, and direct clients.

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot hardware, software, and networking systems, installing and maintaining current hardware and software as well as replacing defective components with recommended hardware and software purchases. Work with faculty, specialists, and staff in developing and updating software for expert systems, reporting tools, and programs generating recommendations.

  • Analyze, develop, and maintain the laboratory database, website, and web servers. Work with database developers to interface laboratory equipment to the database and facilitate report generation.

  • Support AESL laboratory and administrative staff in data collection, processing, and reporting, including data capture from instruments, tablets, and manual entry, as well as distribution of analytical reports to end users. Analyze equipment performance records and determine the need for repair or software development for reporting, statistical, accounting, mapping, QA/QC, and automation purposes.
  • Retain data security by maintaining appropriate hardware and software protective measures and backup of database and other assets.
  • Offer training services to County Extension Faculty and Staff on IT services utilized at the county level.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the laboratory’s systems and IT staff, including supervision, training, and evaluations.
