SUMMARY STATEMENT : The Living Collections Animal Keeper is primarily concerned with providing a high-quality visitor experience through practicing and maintaining high professional standards for the husbandry, exhibition, and educational use of the living collection.

This position is responsible for providing daily care to a diverse collection of animals and habitats. The Living Collections Animal Keeper assists in the mentoring of volunteers assigned to the department as well as staff / volunteers wishing to use the living collection in their educational programs and activities.

The Living Collections Animal Keeper will develop and present the living collection in programs and interpretational activities regularly.

This position will strive to continuously improve the lives of our living collection through welfare assessments, training, and environmental enrichment.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Performs a full range of animal care duties, professionally, necessary to ensure the health and well-being of a diverse collection of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish, and invertebrates and to further ensure all animal husbandry conforms to Museum protocols, meets governmental regulations and the AZA accreditation standards.
  • Performs routine cleaning and maintenance related to animal exhibits, public spaces, and off-exhibit spaces to ensure these are kept in a neat, well-organized, and safe manner.
  • Assists in the collection training of staff / volunteer wishing to use the living collection in their educational programs and activities to ensure the best welfare for our collection.
  • Assists in monitoring animal use and animal spaces to ensure all activities are carried out safely and that we are meeting the Museum standards, USDA policies, and AZA best practices.
  • Actively engage visitors in life science / conservation subjects through the development and presentation of living collections programs and interpretations in support of the Museum's mission and overall guest experience.
  • Actively work to enhance animal welfare through assessments, training, and enrichment projects to ensure world-class animal care that meets or exceeds Museum protocols, USDA requirements, and AZA standards.
  • Provide routine care of live plants within the animal enclosures; and in both public and behind-the-scenes locations within the assigned work area.
  • Perform other work-related duties as required by Manage.

WORK SCHEDULE :

Full-Time (Tuesday - Saturday)

REPORTS TO :

Manager of Living Collections

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Education : Post-high school coursework, technical degree, associate's degree, business or vocational certificate.
  • Experience : 6 months or more years of animal care experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to care for both domestic and non-domestic animals.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize work efficiently without direct supervision.
  • Experience working with the public in a busy setting.
  • Public speaking experience.
  • Experience with Microsoft suite.
  • Experience training / handling a variety of animals in a public setting.
  • Knowledge of the natural history of species from New England.
  • Experience working in an AZA-accredited facility.

STARTING SALARY :

Non-Exempt (Hourly) $21.15 per hour
