Job Description

With a focus on flu and COVID vaccines, this position will help to normalize for all Cooperative Extension audiences across the western region of the US that while we are out of the COVID-19 pandemic, the virus is here to stay, and we can take appropriate steps on an annual basis to protect the health of our families and ourselves. With the goal of helping to routinize flu and COVID vaccines among the general adult population on an annual basis, this position will focus on lower income, rural, and / or otherwise medically underserved populations, with attention to bringing culturally relevant educational content in the primary languages of diverse community groups across the region. Central to this role is developing community-centered, up-to-date, science-based vaccine educational materials, disseminating the materials to coincide with seasonal campaigns, and engaging local and statewide partnerships to inform and advance the success of these efforts.

This position is a contract appointment that is 100% fixed and ends three years from date of hire with the possibility of extension if funding permits.

The home department is Community Nutrition and Health. While this position normally is based in Davis, CA, this position is eligible for hybrid flexible work arrangements for applicants living in the State of California at this time. Please note that hybrid flexible work arrangements are subject to change by the University.

Pay Scale : $22.66 / hour to $30.12 / hour

Key Responsibilities :

50%

Providing immunization education in the geographic area designated by the region.

  • Delivering lessons using adult engagement techniques, extend education to community partners and / or program participants.
  • Recruiting, training, and providing support for community organizations and representatives who act as volunteers to deliver UC approved curricula and activities.
  • Preparing all reports as necessary for documenting program accomplishments.
  • Customizing flyers with local info on where to go for vaccines.
  • Attending health fairs and clinic and / or providing resources to local partners on getting vaccinated.
  • Advancing strategic communications campaigns in focused geographic areas (where funds are available).
  • Providing in person education with a focus on seniors / older adults as a priority population - in person education.
  • Leveraging the resources in Extension EXCITE toolkit.
  • Leads efforts to disseminate positive messaging about COVID vaccines intended to normalize and routinize vaccinations as part of a cyclical practice to protect your family.
  • May provide language translations of class materials and / or simultaneous interpretation during classes into preferred language of participant population, as well as develop and share culturally relevant examples to enhance the effectiveness of the educational experience.

Providing leadership and professional development to Extension professionals in the region.

Supporting educators to make the conceptual connection to other curriculum topics or other content areas / topics that they are addressing in their communities.

  • Convening a cohort or Community of Practice of extension practitioners across the region to learn and share with one another how they are integrating vaccine education into their work.
  • Developing a replicable process for looking at needs assessment data e.g. vaccination rates, rural health, medically underserved populations.
  • Providing training virtually and in person with other educators; creating opportunities for them to job shadow and / or observe Motivational Interviewing and other demonstrations.
  • Working as a team member to develop annual work plans, share recommendations for improvement, and coach partner agencies on health-related work in their organizations.
  • Developing educational resources in support with an Advisor / Academic.
  • Introducing small-dose educational opportunities and content for educators to share within their existing programming, including passive displays and short videos.

    Personal professional development, scholarship, program evaluation, and reporting.

    Co-leading needs assessment and evaluation activities on a cyclical basis to continually inform program improvement and stay relevant with community input.

  • Participating in leveraging health equity and other public health frameworks to undergird vaccine education efforts, e.g. documenting the impact of social ecological model approaches that interlace individual, community, and societal interventions.

    Developing and maintaining immunization community partnerships at community, regional, or state levels.

    Meeting with local partners (i.e. community leaders, school administrators, teachers, parent educators) to discuss the delivery of lessons to their students and clientele.

  • Assist in developing outreach plans to ensure all eligible racial / ethnic groups have received information regarding program education opportunities and are welcomed to participate with inclusive program practices.
  • Developing collaboration with other programs to coordinate outreach efforts.
  • Attend community events and serve as representative and ambassador for the program.
  • Maintain appropriate records to track the partnership activity, collaboration, and related community events.
  • Engaging with state and local Department of Public Health contacts to stay up to date on available resources / regulations and availability of vaccines in those states.
  • Identifying additional adult immunization topics to prioritize and address within local communities (e.g. HPV, RSV).
  • Building buy in and garnering input into campaign messaging from local DPHs, to align with their efforts.
  • Learning topics that are most relevant to communities re barriers, fears, opportunities, assets etc.
  • Requirements :

    Associate Degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

  • Knowledge of community education, community engagement, teaching and / or facilitation best practices.
  • Proficient in use of Windows-based computer with knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Experience working with a diverse youth, adult and / or volunteers, including diversity in age, race / ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, and / or physical and ability / disability).
  • Experience working with underserved populations.
  • Thorough and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills and presentation skills to work in large and small groups, give presentations and organize activities. Ability to write newsletters, correspondence, and reports.
  • Preferred Skills :

  • Bilingual communication / translation abilities in English and Spanish / Hmong / Mandarin / Vietnamese or other language spoken in the community.
  • Knowledge of community education and or teaching practices.
  • Working knowledge of conducting needs assessment to understand community strengths, interests, and priorities.
  • Special Conditions of Employment :

  • Must possess valid California Driver's License to drive a County or University vehicle. Ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule as needed, proof of liability damage insurance on vehicle used is required. Reimbursement of job-related travel will be reimbursed according to University policies.
  • Travel including travel outside normal business hours may be requested.
  • Overtime and occasional weekend work as needed, usually on short notice to meet operational needs may be requested.
