Payroll Tax Specialist
The Payroll Tax Specialist manages VCU Health System’s Common Paymaster program, which includes annual setup, monthly and quarterly processing, and year end evaluation and reconciliation with Virginia Commonwealth University.
The Payroll Tax Specialist performs audits, reconciliations, and balances of all periodic (bi-weekly or monthly) supplemental, quarterly, and annual tax processing and filings.
This position oversees the process for multi-state payroll tax filings and reconciliations, to include system set up and team members’ tax records.
The Payroll Tax Specialist serves as subject matter expert to ensure company compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws as applicable to withholdings.
The position serves as project manager for the year-end planning committee and its associated processes. The role acts as a liaison across departments, and provides tax guidance to the Payroll Tax Analyst when necessary.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire :
Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) by the American Payroll Association preferred

Experience REQUIRED :
Minimum of five (5+) years of payroll processing and wage / tax reconciliation / reporting work in a large, complex environment required
Experience in the preparation of federal and state amended tax returns
Advance Microsoft Word and Excel experience
Strong organization and follow up skills providing analytical support in payroll tax and related area
Experience PREFERRED
Experience with Cognos report-writing software.
Experience with Ultipro and Workday Payroll software.
Knowledge of Joint Commission (formerly the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO)) standards related to Payroll.
Experience with multi-state taxations laws.
Experience in a healthcare environment.
Education / training REQUIRED :
Bachelor’s Degree in business, accounting, or a related field
Must possess expert-level knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing U.S. Payroll
