This position is being offered within EVS’s Ecology, Natural Resources, and Managed Systems Department. This group uses innovative analytical capabilities to conduct basic and applied research to better understand and manage natural resources.
In this role, you can expect to :
- Assist in the implementation of visual resource research, visual impact assessment project and environmental assessment, Geographic Information Systems analysis and field inventory and site sustainability and design.
- In support of community engagement and energy infrastructure projects such as large-scale onshore and offshore wind, solar and transmission and infrastructure projects on lands and rivers and oceans managed by federal agencies.
- Work as part of a multidisciplinary team working closely with cultural resource specialists, ecologists and physical scientists.
- Produce technical reports, maps figures and publications of findings and research results.
- Work onsite in the Lemont campus 2+ days per week.
The Environmental Science (EVS) Division provides pioneering fundamental and multidisciplinary research to understand and solve global, national, regional, and local energy and environmental challenges using Argonne National Laboratory’s unique, world-class facilities in conjunction with the division’s core competency in predictive environmental understanding.
We conduct research to understand environmental and climate processes at different scales. We develop a suite of models, datasets, and analytical capabilities for climate risk and uncertainty analysis at different scales.
We guide responsible development of energy and new materials and stewardship of natural resources and legacy sites. We develop coupled physical / social models to understand human decisions and behaviors, and we conduct cross-cutting research using high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning (AI / ML), and advanced geospatial tools to improve our predictive power and speed.

Position Requirements
Required skills and qualifications :
- Minimum of a Master’s degree in landscape architecture, environmental science, or related field
- Experience in developing and applying visual resource inventory, impact assessment and mitigation systems to offshore wind energy development projects
Geographic Information Systems
- Auto Desk Cad Software
- Adobe Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator)
- Experience conducting wetland delineations and botanical surveys
- Experience designing and conducting field-based and other research activities relating to impact assessment, ecological inventory, and mitigation for visual environment resources
- Effective written and oral communication skills
- Ability to interact effectively with scientific and engineering professionals
- Ability to meet project deadlines and within budgetary limits
- Demonstrated success in working on several projects simultaneously
- Must demonstrate excellent career growth potential, including proposal development

Preferred skills and qualifications :
- Working knowledge of U.S. federal agency visual resource inventory, impact assessment and mitigation systems
- Knowledge of the BOEM Guidelines for assessment of visual impacts
- Federal land / water management agency policies and regulations, such as NEPA, CWA, and ESA
- Photography skills and graphic communication
- Experience conducting wetland delineations and botanical surveys.
This position can be hired at one of two levels; the selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (PT2 or PT3) dependent upon the depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills.
The minimum requirements of the two levels are as follows :
- PT2 : Bachelor's degree and 2+ years of experience, or equivalent
- PT3 : Bachelor's degree and 4+ years of experience, or a Master's degree and 2+ years of experience, or equivalent
