Position Overview
The Controller will oversee all accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, and compliance for a project-driven construction organization. This role will partner closely with ownership, project managers, and operations leadership to ensure accurate job costing, cash flow forecasting, and financial planning.
This is a highly visible leadership role requiring both technical accounting expertise and strong business acumen.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Reporting
Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reportingPrepare accurate and timely financial statementsManage month-end and year-end close processesDevelop and maintain internal controls and accounting policiesPresent financial performance insights to ownershipConstruction & Job Cost Accounting
Oversee job costing, WIP schedules, and percent-complete accountingMonitor project budgets vs. actuals and analyze variancesReview and approve billing, retainage tracking, and revenue recognitionEnsure accurate cost allocations and project profitability analysisSupport project managers with financial reporting toolsCash Flow & Forecasting
Manage company cash flow and liquidity planningOversee AR, AP, and billing processesMonitor bonding capacity and banking relationshipsAssist in forecasting backlog and pipeline performanceCompliance & Risk Management
Ensure compliance with GAAP and construction accounting standardsOversee audit preparation and tax coordinationManage insurance, bonding, and regulatory reporting requirementsMaintain strong internal controls and risk mitigation processesLeadership & Team Development
Lead and mentor accounting staffImprove processes and implement efficienciesCollaborate cross-functionally with operations and executive leadershipQualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field requiredCPA preferred but not required7+ years of progressive accounting experience3+ years in a leadership roleConstruction industry experience requiredStrong understanding of :Job costingWIP schedulesPercentage-of-completion accountingRetainage and billing structuresProject-based financial forecastingExperience with construction ERP / accounting systems preferredStrong Excel and financial modeling skills
