This is a fully on-site position, Monday through Friday, at our corporate HQ in Tempe, Arizona.
About the team and position
The Engineer, Operations Development is responsible for leading and obtaining buy-in on continuous improvement projects and using lean methodologies to refine processes within Carvana’s Inspection Center organization. This position will work closely and communicate with all departments and levels throughout the business to deliver throughput, cost and quality improvements in a fast-paced, dynamic production environment.
What you’ll be doing :
- Create justification for major projects, cost savings greater than $1M within Inspection Center operations
- Obtain buy-in on major projects through effective communication with multiple departments across the organization
- Deliver cost reductions on time and under budget on major projects, and effectively report out on results
- Serve as a subject matter expert in at least three reconditioning processes within the Inspection Center Operations
- Proactively identify opportunities for continuous improvement by developing standard work and visual training within existing processes
- Partner with leadership and departments across the organization to provide direction on the creation of labor standards and line staffing models
- Take existing technology and adapt it to vehicle reconditioning
- Mentor and train peers on lean manufacturing and process flow
- Evaluate complex production issues and conduct root cause analysis
- Create and present business cases for improvement ideas
- Participate in cross-functional continuous improvement events
- Create current and future state value stream maps
- Develop building and cell layouts to optimize workflow
- Ensure compliance with all environmental, health and safety guidelines
- Select and test tools and equipment

Bachelor's Degree in Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent experience, in relevant fieldMinimum of 5 years of engineering experience in a lean manufacturing environmentKnowledge and understanding of lean manufacturing.Up to 50% travel between Carvana facilities across the U.S.Experience using AutoCAD, Excel, WordStrong analysis and decision making abilityAbility to work independentlyValid driver’s license with a clean driving record (no DUIs and no more than two moving violations in the last 3 years)Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds independently; majority of lifting from knee to shoulder heights; other lifting required from various levelsRequires standing for extended periods of time with frequent stretching, reaching, walking, stooping, pushing, and / or pulling in an environment that may be cold, hot, noisy, and wet and may have fumes or odors due to vehicle maintenanceRequires use of safety equipment that may include but not limited to face shield or goggles, non-slip shoes, gloves, mask, and other protective garments and equipmentAbility to work overtime and on weekendsAbility to communicate and interact with others effectively in a professional, courteous mannerMust be at least 18 years of ageOther requirements
