New Door Ventures prepares young people (ages 17-24) from the culturally rich communities of San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose for work and life. Through our three programs (Employment, Education, and Career Services), we provide dedicated support and a safe space for young people to explore career opportunities and build the skills and confidence they need to achieve economic mobility.

About The Program Director, San Francisco Employment

The Program Director joins New Door at an exciting time of change. This role will lead the implementation of a strengthened program model in San Francisco, including partnership building with high schools and the development of career‑linked training and work‑based learning for youth. Day‑to‑day, this role leads participant recruitment, delivery, contract reporting, and external relations. You will coach and manage program staff, ensuring a participant‑centered environment, achievement of annual program targets and a reputation as a credible and trusted workforce services provider.

This role is non‑exempt and is located primarily on‑site at New Door's Mission District, San Francisco location. New Door follows a hybrid work policy with a 3 : 2 office / remote cadence. In‑office days are Tu, Wed, Thurs organization‑wide. Some in‑city and cross‑region travel is expected.

What Success Looks Like

  • Vision 2030 : Establish formal partnerships with SF high schools to recruit recent graduates and implement a connected, seamless participant pathway aligned with New Door's selected industry and occupational focus areas.
  • Participant Success and Growth : Transition participants from enrollment to program completion with measurable improvements in job skills, personal growth, and employment readiness. Achieve program graduation milestones and maintain high post‑program employment rates exceeding local and state averages for the same age group.
  • Staff Development and Team Leadership : Build and lead a motivated, high‑performing team aligned with New Door Ventures' mission. Foster collaboration and support, provide continuous coaching, and ensure staff meet or exceed performance goals.
  • Achievement of Program Targets : Consistently achieve annual program goals—participant recruitment, retention, and post‑program employment rates—while delivering effective program delivery that adheres to New Door’s model and best practices.
  • Operational and Financial Efficiency : Manage the program’s budget efficiently, ensuring resources are allocated and tracked appropriately, and maintain smooth day‑to‑day operations that meet all safety and compliance standards.
  • Community Engagement and External Partnerships : Actively represent New Door Ventures within the local workforce development ecosystem, establish strong relationships with external partners (local government, workforce coalitions, funders), and leverage those relationships to enhance program offerings and participant outcomes.

Responsibilities

Participant Success

  • Ensure successful participant journey from first point of contact to program graduation / completion.
  • Oversee the overall scope and sequence of the annual outreach plan.
  • Supervise effective implementation of programming, ensuring fidelity to the New Door program model and best practices in workforce development.
  • Collaborate with the Business Partnership team and employment partners to ensure high‑quality work experiences for participants.
  • Collaborate with the Learning and Evaluation team to establish annual goals, ensure timely and accurate internal and external reporting, and contribute to the development of a learning culture.
  • Oversee development of new / updated curricula or training programs, consistent with the program model and Theory of Change.
  • Department Success

  • Lead the youth employment program team, providing coaching and performance management.
  • Develop, support, and monitor staff annual goal setting and performance evaluation processes.
  • Collaborate with the Manager of Staff Training and Development to ensure delivery of department and staff program development and implementation of program development.
  • Coordinate with the Chief Program Officer and Director of Finance and Administration to develop and monitor the department budget.
  • Monitor, control, and report department expenses to properly steward resources against budget, goals and priorities.
  • Oversee employment program delivery and operations, ensuring activities are safe, well‑supervised and consistent with agency policies and values.
  • Organizational Success

  • Model New Door stated values, including but not limited to the belief that youth are assets to our community, and their voices are central to our work.
  • Participate in the annual planning process, setting goals aligned with the strategic plan and monitoring progress for the department, identifying successes, areas of improvement, and needed adjustments.
  • Develop policies and procedures to execute program goals and comply with legal, financial, and contractual requirements.
  • Communicate program activities and results to internal audiences including participants, colleagues, board members and donors.
  • Advocate for and demonstrate excellent programming and operations.
  • Cultivate an organizational culture that prioritizes equity, collaboration, and innovation, creating an environment where staff and participants can thrive and achieve their full potential.
  • External Engagement

  • Actively represent New Door in the local workforce development landscape including relevant coalitions, workforce boards, local government, and funder convenings.
  • Develop relationships with community partners for referrals or partnerships to optimize services to participants with efficient use of resources.
  • Promote learning and participate in learning opportunities with peers.
  • Visit other community‑based organizations in related fields to continue learning best practices.
  • Stay abreast of best practices and serve as a content expert in the area of youth workforce development.
  • Preferred Qualifications & Skills

  • The equivalent of, or a bachelor's degree (or higher) in a related area to training, youth employment or social services.
  • At least eight years of experience managing and developing effective programs with ongoing evaluation, ideally with young people, and with networks within San Francisco.
  • A capacity to build sustainable and productive partnerships with a diverse range of people and organizations, including opportunity youth, board members, business partners, volunteers, funders, consultants, public sector partners, and highly committed staff members.
  • Demonstrated leadership in developing staff, team building, identifying, and achieving metrics and change management.
  • A management style that fosters respect, teamwork, and creative approaches to empowering staff to realize their full potential.
  • Knowledge / experience / familiarity of the communities New Door delivers programming.
  • Inspirational leader who has exceptional interpersonal and relationship‑building abilities.
  • An organized and strategic thinker who is comfortable with oversight and project management and holds a high attention to detail.
  • Demonstrable knowledge in conflict resolution and restorative practices.
