Chief Medical Officer — Phelps Hospital, Northwell Health
Northwell Health is seeking an experienced physician executive to join their world-class team at Phelps Hospital as Chief Medical Officer . The CMO will be a physician leader with strong leadership and clinical credibility, committed to high quality healthcare delivery and fostering an integrated and cohesive medical staff. The role requires relationship-based collaboration with key stakeholder groups inside and outside the hospital, and the ability to relate to employed and voluntary physicians within a highly matrixed organization. The CMO will advance a culture of team building and mentoring and will work with the medical staff, residents, nursing, hospital leadership and all disciplines to ensure delivery of high quality, patient-centered care.
Location : Phelps Hospital is located in Sleepy Hollow, NY. Relocation to the Westchester or Greater NY Metropolitan area is required.
Major Responsibilities and Key Competencies
- Lead and support strong physician engagement.
- In partnership with the hospital SVP and President, lead strategic expansion of key clinical services (surgery, cancer services, neuroscience, digestive health, mother / baby).
- Collaborate with departmental chairs and clinical leaders to elevate the quality of practice across the institution.
- Advance a shared strategic plan to achieve patient satisfaction, quality, efficiency, team engagement, operational goals and program growth, aligned with regional and health system goals.
- Maintain effective communication with medical staff, administration and other departments to ensure cohesion in strategy and operations.
- Foster an aligned culture among physicians, nursing and administration to realize the strategic vision and sustainable growth.
- Partner with Patient and Family Experience to drive improvements in HCAHPS, OAS CAHPS and ED CAHPS results.
- Participate in value-based care improvement efforts, focusing on CMS STARS.
- Attend local Medical Leadership Committee and Article 28 Medical Board meetings.
- Identify opportunities and collaborate on hospital-wide performance improvement programs and clinical standards.
- Lead a culture of caring, innovation, teamwork, integrity and quality; integrate care utilization, quality, safety, credentialing and physician practice evaluation.
- Influence provider clinical behavior in Compliance, Utilization Management and Capacity Management.
- Recruit, retain and develop a world-class clinical staff; collaborate with chairs and division chiefs on recruitment and recognition.
- Spearhead physician acceptance of transparent performance improvement metrics and collaboration with nurses and case managers.
- Grow employee engagement; ensure communications reflect the hospital’s standards and culture.
- Monitor dashboards for quality measures and ensure care meets quality standards of excellence.
- Collaborate with patient care services leadership on Quality Management and Performance Improvement initiatives.
- Support diversity and inclusion among staff, faculty and trainees.
- Participate in philanthropy efforts and community engagement; build and strengthen community-based and regional professional organizations.
Requirements and Ideal Experience
Medical degree from an accredited medical school with board certification.At least ten years of progressive leadership experience in a physician / executive role is highly desirable.Ability to communicate and collaborate with all levels of stakeholders inside and outside the campus.Possess or be eligible for a medical licensure in New York State.Advanced degree in healthcare administration or related field is preferred but not required.Personal Characteristics
