Overview
Chief Medical Officer — Phelps Hospital, Northwell Health. Northwell Health is seeking an experienced physician executive to join the team at Phelps Hospital as Chief Medical Officer. The CMO will be a physician leader with strong leadership and clinical credibility, committed to high-quality healthcare delivery and fostering an integrated, cohesive medical staff. The role requires a relationship-based, collaborative approach with key constituencies inside and outside the hospital and the ability to relate to employed and voluntary physicians within a matrixed organization.
The CMO will advance a culture of team building and mentoring, working with the medical staff, residents, nursing, hospital leadership and other disciplines to ensure delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care. The position includes day-to-day oversight of both direct and indirect reports, with responsibility for 300+ FTEs and an annual budget exceeding $41M.
Major Responsibilities and Key Competencies
- Lead and support strong physician engagement.
- In partnership with the hospital SVP and President, lead strategic expansion of key clinical services (surgery, cancer services, neuroscience, digestive health, and mother / baby services) and elevate the quality of practice.
- Collaborate with departmental chairs and clinical leaders to improve practice quality across the institution.
- Develop and advance a strategic plan to achieve patient satisfaction, quality, efficiency, team engagement, operational goals and program growth, aligned with regional and system goals.
- Maintain effective communication with the medical staff, administration, and all hospital departments to ensure cohesion in strategy and operations.
- Foster an aligned, collaborative culture among physicians, nursing, and administration to realize the strategic vision and ensure sustainable success.
- Partner with Patient and Family Experience to drive improvements in HCAHPS, OASCAHPS, and ED CAHPS results.
- Participate in value-based care improvements, including CMS STARS initiatives.
- Attend local Medical Leadership Committee and Hospital medical board meetings.
- Identify opportunities and collaborate on hospital-wide performance improvement programs and objectives for patient care.
- Help establish and monitor clinical and professional standards, compliance, and outcomes for high performance.
- Lead a culture of caring, innovation, teamwork, integrity, and quality.
- Provide an integrating force linking care utilization, quality and safety, credentialing, and physician practice evaluation.
- Influence provider behavior to ensure compliance, utilization, and capacity management.
- Recruit, retain, develop, and recognize a world-class clinical staff in partnership with department chairs and division chiefs.
- Spearhead transparency in performance improvement metrics and collaborate with nurses and case managers.
- Grow employee engagement and ensure communications reflect the hospital and health system’s standards and culture.
- Monitor quality dashboards to ensure adherence to quality standards.
- Partner with patient care services leadership on quality management and performance improvement initiatives related to the hospital and medical staff.
- Support diversity and inclusion among staff, faculty, and trainees.
- Participate in philanthropy efforts and community outreach, including donor development and campaigns as applicable to the role.
- Build and strengthen community-based and regional professional networks and collaborate with other organizations on health programs.
Requirements and Ideal Experience
Medical degree from an accredited medical school with board certification.At least ten years of progressive leadership experience in a physician, executive, or leadership role (highly desirable).Ability to clearly communicate and collaborate with all levels of stakeholders inside and outside the Phelps campus.Possess or be eligible for a New York medical license.Advanced degree in healthcare administration or related field is preferred but not required.Personal Characteristics
