The Leidos Surface Transportation group focuses on improving transportation system operations to achieve USDOT’s safety and mobility goals. The Leidos Surface Transportation group spearheads a variety of exciting R&D and deployment projects for federal, state, and local transportation agencies, including cutting-edge R&D for the Federal Highway Administration’s Saxton Transportation Operation Laboratory (STOL).  Our work focuses on emerging technologies, including but not limited to infrastructure and vehicle connectivity and automation, everything-in-the loop simulation, and AI / ML modeling. To promote these efforts, Leidos is looking for a Cybersecurity Architect / Engineer – Connected Intelligent Transportation Systems (C-ITS) to join our team!

Learn more about :

  • The Leidos Surface Transportation group : -transportation-research
  • The Saxton Transportation Operations Laboratory : -fairbank-highway-research-center / labs / STOL

Why Join Us :

  • Expert Role : Be recognized as a subject matter expert in Cybersecurity and Security Engineering.
  • Innovative Work : Influence the development of cutting-edge on-prem and Hybrid solutions.
  • Independence : Tackle complex problems with your technical expertise.
  • Primary Responsibilities

This role will shape and define security architectures across new captures, spearhead our approach to Secure by Design and develop security strategies, documentation and approaches. You will be able to work with minimal direction across a range of projects or bids. You will have the responsibility for interfacing with security design partners, both customer and supplier representatives, and colleagues within our engineering, service, and business development teams. You will ensure that Leidos can establish and maintain effective and efficient C-ITS security architectures that can adapt as customer requirements, legislation and assurance standards change over time. Within a specific project or bid, the role will primarily be responsible for developing and delivering the cybersecurity elements of a solution, whilst understanding the whole.

    Minimal Qualifications

  • Strong interest in working with emerging technologies and shaping the future of transportation.
  • Strong communication skills; able to successfully communicate with management personnel, technical personnel and third parties.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field with 6+ years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education, certifications, and experience.
  • Experience with IoT platforms and devices.
  • Strong understanding of cyber risk and treatment approaches, both in traditional ‘on-premise’ platforms within the C-ITS and related industries, and in private and public cloud technologies.
  • Experience in integrating risk management framework activities into the system development lifecycle (SDLC), including selecting, implementing, and validating security controls.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining key security documentation such as System Security Plans (SSPs), Security Assessment Reports (SARs), Risk Assessments, and Plan of Action and Milestones (POA&Ms).
  • Experience with reviewing cybersecurity vulnerabilities for risk and relevance as well as in vulnerability mitigations / remediation planning, for identified systems, network, application and database vulnerabilities.
  • Ability to architect, design, troubleshoot, maintain, and deploy vulnerability scanning solutions.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance (which includes three years of immediate residency in the US).
  • All applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with existing connected transportation interoperability (CTI), C-ITS, vehicle-to-everything standards such as those from ITE, SAE and / or IEEE.
  • Familiarity with existing C-ITS software and hardware systems.
  • Knowledge of vehicle critical control systems and subsystems.
  • Experience in a fast-paced dynamic R&D environment.
  • Relevant Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education, certifications, and experience.
  • Redhat, Cisco or Microsoft, Security+, Linux+, or Network+ certifications
  • Sourcefire (snort) or RSA Security Analytics (network) experience.
  • Experience as software or system engineering team lead.
  • Familiarity with secure software development practices, application security architecture, and development environment hardening.
  • Experience with tools for ticketing and documentation (e.g., Gitlab, Jira, Confluence).
  • Experience working in an Agile environment.
  • Anticipated salary range for this role is $95,000-$130,000

At Leidos, we don’t want someone who "fits the mold"—we want someone who melts it down and builds something better. This is a role for the restless, the over-caffeinated, the ones who ask, “what’s next?” before the dust settles on “what’s now.”

If you’re already scheming step 20 while everyone else is still debating step 2… good. You’ll fit right in.

    Original Posting : October 3, 2025

For U.S. Positions : While subject to change based on business needs, Leidos reasonably anticipates that this job requisition will remain open for at least 3 days with an anticipated close date of no earlier than 3 days after the original posting date as listed above.

    Pay Range : Pay Range $85,150.00 - $153,925.00

The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
