Position description

The Department of Geography, at the University of California, Santa Barbara seeks a qualified candidate for a post-doctoral research position in ocean dynamics and modeling. The qualified candidate will have the opportunity to work on computational research related to one (or more) of the following areas : coastal dynamics (surf-zone to shelf), submesoscale processes, kelp-current interactions, or marine carbon dioxide removal. A primary focus will be on the development and analysis of downscaled Regional Oceanic Modeling System (ROMS) simulations of the Santa Barbara Channel; the qualified candidate will also have the opportunity to develop and analyze idealized simulations. Qualified candidates must have numerical modeling experience and a demonstrated record of first-author publication in physical oceanography, environmental fluid mechanics, or a related discipline. The qualified candidate will work with Dr. Daniel Dauhajre in the Computational Ocean Dynamics and Ecosystems group and have the opportunity to interact with researchers in the Earth Research Institute and Marine Science Institute at UCSB. The candidate is expected to coordinate research activities, publish peer-reviewed journal articles, and present research results at professional conferences.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Applicants must have completed all requirements for a PhD Degree in Oceanography / Marine Science / Environmental Fluid Mechanics, or a related discipline except the dissertation at the time of application

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

PhD awarded by the time of appointment.

Preferred qualifications

• Expertise in physical oceanography and / or environmental fluid mechanics.
• Expertise in ocean circulation modeling.
• Ability to independently design and generate simulations using the Regional Oceanic Modeling System (ROMS) or other related codes (e.g., COAWST, CROCO, MITgcm, Oceananigans) in realistic and / or idealized configurations.
• Ability to analyze TB of NetCDF ocean model output.
• Fluency in Fortran, Python, and / or Matlab.
• Demonstrated record (first-author publications, conference presentations) of independently led research in physical oceanography, environmental fluid mechanics, or related fields.
