Patient Care Technician
Title and starting pay rate of this position may vary based on years of experience. Responsibilities include providing patient care, assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living, and assisting with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies. The role also involves performing UPMC nursing core responsibilities such as blood glucose checks, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections, and Foley care, as well as at least four of the following tasks : phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal. The patient care technician must also ensure equipment malfunctions are reported, establish effective communication with other departments, and contribute to universal unit activities. They should constructively receive feedback, identify and communicate learning needs, and participate in self-review. Instruction to patients and their families under the direction of the RN is also required, along with the ability to apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints. The technician must communicate clearly and effectively with the health care team, support changes within the department, and document in the medical record according to established procedures. They must be fully competent with UPMC nursing core assistant responsibilities and perform at least one advanced skill based on department operational need. The position requires a high school diploma or GED, successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class, and successful completion of eRecord training. CPR is required based on AHA standards, and ACLS is preferred. Act 31, Act 33, Act 34, and Act 73 FBI Clearance are also required.
