Role Overview
As a Senior Property Underwriter , you will be responsible for evaluating, selecting, and pricing property risks in accordance with company guidelines and market conditions. You will manage a book of business, work closely with brokers and internal teams, and contribute to the development of underwriting strategy and product innovation.
This role requires a high level of technical expertise, market awareness, and relationship management skills. You'll be expected to make sound underwriting decisions, negotiate terms effectively, and maintain profitability across your portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
Analyze property insurance submissions, assess risk quality, and determine appropriate pricing and coverage terms. Apply underwriting guidelines and judgment to ensure profitable growth.
Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and agents. Serve as a trusted advisor and resource, providing responsive service and creative solutions.
Monitor the performance of your book of business, identify trends, and take corrective action as needed. Collaborate with actuarial and analytics teams to optimize results.
Participate in product development, underwriting strategy, and market expansion initiatives. Provide feedback on underwriting tools, systems, and processes.
Support junior underwriters through coaching, training, and technical guidance. Help foster a culture of continuous learning and excellence.
Ensure all underwriting decisions and documentation meet regulatory and internal standards. Maintain accurate records and contribute to audit readiness.
Ideal Candidate Profile
We're looking for candidates who bring a combination of technical skill, business acumen, and interpersonal effectiveness. The ideal candidate will have :
5-7+ years of property underwriting experience, preferably within an MGA, carrier, or Lloyd's syndicate environment. Experience with both commercial and residential property lines is a plus.
Strong understanding of property insurance products, risk assessment methodologies, rating tools, and coverage structures. Familiarity with catastrophe modeling and reinsurance is beneficial.
Awareness of current market trends, competitive dynamics, and regulatory developments. Ability to adapt underwriting strategy to changing conditions.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to explain complex underwriting decisions clearly and persuasively.
Comfortable using underwriting platforms, CRM systems, and data analytics tools. Experience with tools like RMS, AIR, or proprietary modeling systems is a plus.
CPCU, ARM, AU, or other relevant insurance designations are preferred but not required.
