Structural Engineering Director - Chicago, IL
Bowman Consulting is hiring for a Structural Engineering Director to join our team in Chicago, IL.
Purpose
Responsible for leading the structural engineering function of the assigned business unit.
Responsibilities
- Receive broad guidance from senior-level management regarding objectives and policy. Manage people and processes to ensure effective execution. Review work produced by staff for quality assurance.
- Provide oversight and direction of the department or business unit including strategy, budgeting, staff, and deliverables. Coordinate with other internal departments to meet project requirements.
- Act as advisor to the engineering team regarding projects, tasks, and operations. Market the firm’s capabilities to establish new clients and enhance relationships.
- Hire, train, retain, and develop engineering staff. Oversee all projects to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery in accordance with client requirements and company policies.
- Provide work assignments and review performance to ensure efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff. Serve as a technical advisor with senior-level input on projects.
- Develop and evaluate criteria for project plans. Write proposals and price projects for review by management. Approve design changes, specifications, and drawing releases.
- Verify specifications for use in engineering design and development. Review status reports, recognize discrepancies, and perform field investigations or inspections.
- Serve as liaison with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects. Assist with marketing to establish new clients and enhance relationships with existing clients.
- Keep current on engineering specifications, trends, and developments to recommend changes in program or design methods.

Bachelor’s degree in structural engineering or related field. Master’s degree preferred.Fifteen or more (15+) years of relevant experience in structural engineering including project management, staff supervision, leadership, and client relationships.Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.Proficiency with design software such as STAAD, MicroStation, AutoCAD, MDX, LEAP, etc. Experience with IDOT and AASHTO LRFD bridge design specifications.Experience managing the financial, marketing, human resources, and operations aspects of an engineering department.About Bowman
